Beginning back in October of 2010 the Department of Planning and Public Works which is a Division of Integrated Waste Management hosted a free tire recycling event. This was funded by a grant provided by the department a resources recycling and recovery. Over the course of the next several months five separate tire recycling events were held where a total of over 6,368 tires were collected by local residents and businesses. That’s great news for the Stockton area because it means that all of those tires didn’t end up in a landfill or dumped by the side of the road. Instead they were taken to a proper facility where they could be melted down and repurposed. But there was a problem that crept up and that was running out of grant money. In fact so many tires were brought to the previous events that last scheduled tire recycling event had to be canceled.
Starting in November California banks scheduled over 26,000 homes to be sold in foreclosure auctions. That represents a 63% increase over the amount of foreclosed auctions held in October. There are no signs that this surge is going to diminish in the coming year as California has the dubious honor of ranking among the nation’s largest number of foreclosed properties. Yet even with all that doom and gloom there is some good news to extract. While it is true that those homeowners will have a blemish on their credit history they will also have the opportunity to start fresh and rebuild their financial security. We would all be better off if we live within our means. On the other hand, all of those foreclosed property auctions means that somebody is buying up those properties and intends to make them viable once again.
Just as you can’t turn away from looking at an accident along the side of the road it’s hard to take just a passing glance at the reality show “Hoarders” without getting drawn into the complicated lives of the folks depicted there. The hoarders on that show are clearly dealing with some deep psychological trauma. If it was a common ailment we all have trash up to the rafters.
