It’s always fun to read the Sonoma County sheriff’s blotter. This is a daily update of calls into the sheriff’s office. Some of these reports sound like they come from the classic “angry neighbor.”
“At 7:48 a.m. Monday Nov. 11, a caller told deputies about a mechanical disturbance in the 29200 block of Sonoma Way. The informant stated the house directly behind hers was undergoing noisy construction. The caller said the workers were breaking city code because Monday was Veteran’s Day – a federal holiday.”
Technically, just because it is a federal holiday doesn’t mean all work should stop. That neighbor was probably just bothered because she had to be home when the work was going on. Then there are the kinds of stories that make you glad you weren’t a witness to:
“At 2:05 p.m. Sunday Nov. 10, someone reported a suspicious person in the 3170 block of Camino Capistrano. A man with no pants was walking by the local Starbucks.”
There are other updates that beg for more explanation:
“At 7:44 p.m. Sunday Nov. 10, a caller reported a group of trespassers in the 33700 block of Camino Capistrano. The informant claimed a group of people was inside a dumpster behind the local Residence Inn, which was making patrons uncomfortable.”
A “group of people” inside a dumpster? You really want to know what a group of people were doing in that dumpster. Of course, this is also a perfect reminder of why having a dumpster on your property is so potentially dangerous: It’s going to attract all kinds of undesirable elements. Sadly, when you rent a dumpster you’ll have to keep it for a few days. It doesn’t make business sense for them to drop off and pick up in the same day. Can you guarantee that the dumpster won’t pull in someone who is looking to do a little “diving” on their own?
You can avoid that temptation by avoiding the dumpster. Instead, call Junk King in Sonoma County to get rid of all your unwanted stuff. One call to Junk King will have a two man crew coming over to your property to pick up and load whatever you’re throwing out. That means that unlike with the dumpster rental, you won’t be doing any backbreaking lifting with Junk King. Best of all, your junk will be gone in a flash. This is really the most sensible and affordable way to clear out the clutter from your home. Forget the dumpster. Put Junk King on the job!
One novel approach to taking care of e-waste is what happened recently at a event sponsored by the local Sonoma government: All the stuff was put out for people to take if they wanted to. Whatever was left over at the end of the day was carted off to a recycling center. That might seem like a good idea on paper but it is really just “kicking the can down the road” or in this case “kicking the laptop.” If the stuff that was collected was out of date or didn’t work it’s not going to do anybody any good. The result of this event was six dumpsters full of e-waste still left over at the end of the day. You have to wonder if anything that was taken will end up back at next year’s swap meet. A much more efficient approach would be to simply hire Junk King Sonoma.
Here is how Sonoma County Connections describes this region: “Sonoma County is conveniently located 30 miles north of San Francisco. With over 200 award-winning wineries, scenic coastline and beaches, the mystical Russian River, majestic redwoods, 21 challenging golf courses, a thrilling road course and drag strip, more than 40 spas, fascinating museums, shopping, galleries, diverse festivals, farm markets and a variety of incredible eateries.” They also rightly ask, “Why wouldn’t you choose Sonoma County?”
Are you ready for football season? You’ve got your home team jersey, your schedule, your best nacho recipe and your fantasy league all fired up and ready to go. What you might be missing is a decent television to watch the games on. Maybe this is the year that you’re finally going to break down and get that big screen flat TV. There has never been a better time to buy a TV like this. Back when flat screens first came onto the market the average cost for a decent set started around $10,000. Not you can get an amazing TV at a fraction of that cost. Plug in the surround sound system and you’re good to go not only for football but for movies, too! Since you spend a lot of time with your television don’t you deserve to have the best quality picture and sound?
Spring isn’t the only time for a big cleanup. Recently, 371 Sonoma County volunteers turned up for the 29th Annual Fall California Coastal Cleanup Day. At the end of the day, they had amassed an amazing 4,366 pounds of trash. Yes, for those who know their weights and measures that would be two tons of garbage!
If you’re suffering from melted ice cream syndrome then it might be time for a new refrigerator. This happens when things don’t stay frozen like they should. Over in the food side, veggies are wilting and everything is just flat. The fault is in your icebox. As you head out to buy a new model you’re surely going to be tempted to upgrade in terms of special features and why not? Aren’t you long overdue for a ice/water dispenser and touch button controls? You should also get the storage compartments you need as to opposed to the kind you’re stuck with in an old fridge.
Just because winter is around the corner doesn’t mean you have to shut down your home garden. In fact, there are many ways to have fresh homegrown veggies throughout the year. Recently the Valley of the Moon Garden Club had a workshop instructing folks on how to plant and harvest a garden this winter. Quarter Acre Farm owner Andrea Davis-Cetina lead the workshop and when it comes to sustainable gardening she is a true expert.
When it comes to having a great day or a blah day it could all come down to how you spent the night. In other words, did you get a good night’s sleep? Sleep is one of those things we all share. It’s part of our physiology. Without good sleep we can become irritable, lose focus and be sluggish all day long. That’s not good for anyone. There are many factors which could be standing between you and a decent sleep. The first thing you should look at is environmental. In other words, are you sleeping on the right mattress?
There might be a time very soon when you’ll no longer be asked “Paper or plastic?” at the grocery store. That’s because there is a push on to get plastic bags out of Sonoma. The plan would allow shoppers to bring their reusable bags or purchase paper bags for ten cents a pop. In order for this ban to go into effect all nine Sonoma County cities have to sign off. This ban is already in effect in other areas of the state and country. Maybe if folks weren’t so careless with the bags in the first place it wouldn’t have become an issue.
Have you been in a home where you were afraid to sit on the furniture? There could be two reasons for this: It’s too fancy or too ragged looking. In many homes a sofa in the living room becomes the most used piece of furniture next to the bed. That’s why it’s a very important purchase to make. In fact, it’s right up there with a new car or mattress. Before heading out to the showroom make sure you measure your space. You might think you know how big your sofa is but if you opt for something even a few inches larger you could find yourself in trouble especially when it means getting it through the front door. You might also rethink the space your current sofa resides in. Maybe a sectional will work in that space and give you even more room for people to get comfy.
