Dumpster Rental in San Francisco to Deal with C&D Debris

When most of us think about the issues of trash and pollution, we probably think about plastic bags, Styrofoam cups, and other types of packaging waste that we throw away on a daily basis. Though these types of trash certainly contribute to our overall waste problem, another source of waste is much more problematic in terms of total volume.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), around “600 million tons of C&D debris were generated in the United States in 2018, which is more than twice the amount of generated municipal solid waste (MSW).” To put that into perspective, the waste from construction and demolition sites was more than double the amount of all the waste taken away by municipal garbage trucks across the country.

Construction and Demolition (C&D) debris is a type of waste from construction sites. The most common types of C&D debris includes steel, wood products, drywall and plaster, brick and clay tile, asphalt shingles, concrete, and asphalt concrete, glass from windows and doors, used carpeting and wood flooring, and other common building materials. C&D debris is generated both by individual homes and larger commercial building projects. It also comes from massive infrastructure engineering projects such as from the construction of roads and bridges.

This short article will analyze some of the specific challenges that come with C&D debris in the San Francisco area. We then look at one simple strategy that allow individuals, homeowners, and business owners to responsibly deal with the C&D debris that they generate.

C&D - Yellow Jack hammer unearthing ground and Creating Construction Debris

Construction Projections in the San Francisco Area

Across the country and around the world, new homes, businesses, and other infrastructure will need to be built in the coming decades to properly house and service our growing population. Furthermore, as the building sector attempts to reduce its emissions via low carbon and zero carbon building techniques, major retrofits of existing buildings will most likely also begin to ramp up. Advances in energy efficient building techniques fortunately means that our built infrastructure will reduce its carbon footprint. On the other hand, new building projects (and demolition projects) inevitably result in enormous amounts of C&D debris.

In the San Francisco region alone, new house construction should continue to grow in the coming years. For much of the past three decades, the San Francisco Bay Area has faced a serious affordable housing shortage. In October of 2015, San Francisco had the highest rents of any major US city, and ex-mayor Ed Lee called the shortage a “housing crisis.” As housing prices drop in the post-COVID world, new construction of single family and multi-family housing units should continue to grow.

Furthermore, the state of California is continually implementing new legislation regarding renewable energy sources and energy efficient building techniques in an attempt to reduce the carbon emissions of the building industry. This legislation will also continue to increase the demand on the construction sector, as energy efficient retrofits become more common.

Both new construction and renovations on existing infrastructure will certainly create an enormous amount of construction and demolition debris that needs to be properly disposed of. Unlike other towns and cities that allow C&D debris to be sent to the landfills, the Bay area is one of the national leaders in requiring the recycling and proper disposal of this type of debris.

The San Francisco Department of the Environment states that “by law, C&D debris material removed from a project must be recycled or reused. No C&D debris can be taken to landfill or put in the garbage.” This ordinance, in effect since 2006, has drastically reduced the pressure on area landfills. It has also forced local builders and others in the industry to increase the amount of recycled materials incorporated into their building projects, thus contributing to the growing Circular Economy that is emerging in the Bay area.

Renting a Dumpster to Responsibly (and Legally) Deal with C&D Debris from Your Construction Project

According to the San Francisco Ordinance No.27-06 that took effect on July 1, 2006, C&D debris material is required by law to be separated by type at the job site (source-separated) for reuse or recycling (such as metal, wood, drywall, cardboard, concrete, etc.) must be taken to a facility that reuses or recycles those materials.

Besides offering several different sizes of dumpster (as measured by the cubic yard), we can also help you find the best place to locate your dumpster. You can read a detailed explanation of the ordinance regulating the placement of dumpster rentals and debris boxes in San Francisco here.

Once you have hired a dumpster from Junk King of San Francisco, you simply need to let us know when you need us to come and pick up the contents. A Quest to Become a Zero Waste City: Junk Pick Up San Francisco

Several years ago, the ex-mayor of San Francisco, Edwin Lee proclaimed that San Francisco had achieved an impressive 80 percent diversion rate of waste heading to landfills. According to the press release, “Recycling and composting is not only good for our environment, it is also good for our economy,” said Mayor Lee. ”Recycling alone creates 10 times more jobs than simply sending refuse to the landfill, and I applaud Recology, the Department of Environment and San Franciscans for reaching this record milestone of 80 percent diversion.”

The city of San Francisco is widely regarded as the national leader in the campaign to achieve a zero waste future. The process of achieving an 80 percent landfill diversion rate is testament to the public investment in recycling and compost programs. Furthermore, the city´s waste reduction programs that focus on reuse and repurposing waste is another strategy helping to keep trash out of area landfills. The collective efforts of the city government, local businesses, and every individual citizen in the city of San Francisco is why San Francisco was named the Greenest City in North America and receive a perfect score for resource recovery and recycling category in the 2011 Siemens Green City Index.

Despite these important advances and achievements, a closer look at the city´s waste management programs shows that individuals, homeowners, and business owners continue to generate large amounts of trash that do eventually end up in landfills. In this short article, we take an in-depth look at how the city achieved its 80 percent landfill diversion rate, and how the junk pickup services offered by Junk King of San Francisco can help the city advance even farther on its quest to become America´s first Zero Waste city.

Pile of old Furniture and home debris

The Number Crunching Needed to Achieve an 80 Percent Landfill Diversion Rate

Let´s start with the well-known figure related to the amount of trash that each and every individual in the United States produces on a daily basis. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average person in the United States produces around 4.4 pounds of trash per day. In the state of California, the average amount of trash produced per person is slightly higher at 4.7 pounds of trash each day (as per 2016 statistics). On a nationwide level, only about one-third of that trash ends up getting recycled, composted reused, or repurposed, meaning that each person is responsible for around 2.9 pounds of trash ending up in landfills or incinerators every day.

One would think that the 80 percent landfill diversion rate for the city of San Francisco would mean that 80 percent of the trash we produce gets either composted or recycled. But´s let´s take a closer look at the numbers.

Firstly, it is important to state that the city of San Francisco has a much higher “per capita waste-generation rate” with an average of 7.5 pounds of waste and recyclables being generated per person per day. That is almost 60 percent more trash per person than the national average. The higher standards of living in the Bay area unfortunately lead to higher levels of consuming, thus putting more stress on the city´s waste management systems.

This might not be a serious problem if 80 percent of that trash did get recycled, reused, or repurposed, which would leave just 1.5 pounds of trash heading to local landfills or incinerators. Unfortunately, that isn’t what happens. San Francisco’s 80 percent diversion rate is actually the product of how the San Francisco Department of Environment counts and calculates the city´s recyclable material. The city certainly does have an impressive program to recycle everyday post-consumer products made from paper, metal, glass, and plastics; as well as an exemplary organic waste composting program. However, to achieve that impressive 80 percent figure, the city includes large quantities of very heavy construction materials such as excavated fill and rubble, which are subsequently reused as infill and road base. Furthermore, the city´s Department of Environment also counts the “recycling” of bio-solids which are applied to agricultural land as part of their diversion total.

Free Construction Debris Removal Guide

Construction and debris (C&D) and bio-solid waste certainly accounts for a major amount of waste that unfortunately continues to accumulate in landfills across the country. C&D debris is actually more than double the amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) on a national level. The fact that the City of San Francisco is making efforts to keep those elements out of landfills should certainly be applauded. However, it is important to understand that the 80 percent diversion rate does NOT mean that 80 percent of municipal solid waste (MSW) is either recycled, reused, or repurposed.

The truth is that due to their higher waste-per-capita generation, San Franciscans send roughly the same quantities of trash to the dump as most other Americans.

What Can be Done to Reduce Your Individual Waste Footprint?

The statistics provided above should make it clear that individuals, homeowners, and business owners in San Francisco can do more to reduce their waste footprints. Besides dutifully separating your recyclables and organics every week when the Recology trucks come to pick up your weekly trash, making an effort to recycle, donate, or repurpose your bulky trash items should also be a high priority.

Junk King of San Francisco offers efficient and affordable junk removal services for residents, homeowners, and business owners of San Francisco. While you could haul your old couch out to the curb and place a “free” sign in hopes that somebody might come and pick it up, chances are that you would be rewarded with a hefty fine before anyone actually removed the thing. San Francisco´s municipal trash service only offers one (and sometime two) free bulk item pickups to individuals every year, and charges businesses a small fee.

If you don’t have a free pickup but are burdened with an enormous amount of junk you need to get rid of, Junk King of San Francisco can help you avoid the headache of self-hauling your old junk to the nearest collection facility. With a simple phone call or text, we can set up a time and date to come and help you get free up space in your home by getting rid of your used furniture items.

Dumpster Rental Service in San Francisco

Let´s take a look at some of the rather outlandish statistics related to the amount of trash that we accumulate here in United States:

  • We collectively throw away 2.5 million plastic water bottles every HOUR. That amounts to well over 22 billion plastic bottles of water every year.
  • Despite the drastic drop in “snail mail” service, the average American continues to receive at least 560 pieces of junk mail per year, or about 1.5 trees that are cut down to make the paper for the junk mail you probably don’t even read.
  • Every three months, the United States throws away enough aluminum trash to completely rebuild our ENTIRE commercial air fleet.
  • With the rise of cell phones, computers, and other electronic appliances and devices, we are now producing around 9.4 million tons of “e-waste” each and every year. According to one report, “electronic waste affects nearly every system in the human body because the materials that make up e-waste contain a plethora of toxic components, including mercury, lead, cadmium, polybrominated flame retardants, barium, and lithium.” Only 12.5 percent of electronic waste is currently recycled.
  • A typical household throws away between 10 and 15 percent of the food that it purchases. In total, Americans throw away 21.5 million tons of food waste each year. When landfilled, this organic waste combines with inorganic waste to release an enormous amount of methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gasses.
  • Over 12 million tons of furniture and furnishings are also sent to the landfill each year, many of them in decent shape.

Junk King Dumpster filled with Debris

These statistics should send us a wakeup call to the fact that the amount of waste that we generate on a daily basis is simply unsustainable. Often, we only think about the “tail end” of the waste streams we generate: the landfill. According to one recent analysis, “seven states are looking at running out of landfill space in the next five years, one state will reach capacity in five to 10 years and three states have 11 to 20 years to go.” Though a lack of landfill space is a very real problem, the negative environmental effects of our waste streams go far beyond where our waste eventually ends up.

junk removal service recycling

Consider the issue of wasted food.  Much of the food waste we create unfortunately ends up landfilled and contributes to the issue of global warming via methane emissions, as we mentioned above. However, wasted food also contributes to other ecological problems. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) estimates that the amount of food waste we generate each year is equal 19 percent of all U.S. cropland used to produce crops, 18 percent of all the farming fertilizer used every year, 2.6 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions, 21 percent of the total agricultural water usage, and around $218 billion in economic losses, or 1.3 percent of the total gross domestic product (GDP).

Obviously, dealing with the huge amount of waste that we accumulate starts with questioning our individual consumer habits. Maybe investing in a water filter could help us reduce the purchase of so many plastic water bottles. Despite this fact, however, accumulating excess amounts of junk almost always seems to occur at certain times. Whether you are helping a distant family member deal with a “hoarding” problem, or you simply need to get rid of some old office furniture that is taking up space in the attic of the small business you own, renting a dumpster from a local junk removal service is often the best option to efficiently get rid of the accumulated junk that is taking up space in your home or business. Might there be a way to ensure that the junk you toss into a dumpster isn’t simply sent to the nearest landfill, thus further contributing to the landfill crisis we mentioned above?

Prepare For the Summer with a Dumpster Rental

While most of us have probably heard about “spring cleaning,” we also probably know that the months of summer are a great opportunity to continue decluttering inside and around our home. Whether you are planning a major home renovation, or simply want to reclaim the space that has been taken over by too much stuff, renting a dumpster during the summer is a great way to effectively and hygienically get rid of your junk. Below, we take an in-depth look at the benefits and advantages that come with renting a dumpster for a summer de-cluttering, and then offer some advice on how to find the best dumpster rental company for your needs.

summer cleaning guide

Benefits and Advantages of Renting a Dumpster for the Summer

Summer is easily the best time of the year for any type of home renovation. Whether you are doing a DIY home project, or hiring a professional contractor, the warm temperatures and relatively limited rainfall are conducive to making improvements on your home or business. Renting a dumpster for your home renovation project is not only helpful, but might also be a legal requirement, especially if your renovation or remodeling project generates lots of bulky trash. Dumpster rentals afford you an easy way to get rid of cumbersome trash items such as the odd piece of plywood, old insulation that you needed to replace, or the large couch that no longer fit with your new interior design.

Instead of hiring a trash removal company for each of these items, a dumpster rental makes it easy to quickly and easily store that trash for a few days or a week until the dumpster is full or you´re finished with your project. Furthermore, for home cleanouts or for major decluttering projects, a dumpster rental can make it easy for you to get your large, bulky furniture items and appliances out of your home.

In fact, the city of San Francisco has a public ordinance that expressly regulates these types of trash items. According to the San Francisco Public Works Department, “it is illegal to leave furniture, appliances, garbage bags, or anything on the sidewalk at any time unless you have a scheduled pick up from a licensed hauler or donation facility.”

What You Need to Know When Renting a Dumpster for the Summer

Before you rent a dumpster for your summer decluttering or renovation project, there are few things that you need to take into consideration.

  1. Determine the correct size dumpster you will need: Dumpsters come in different sizes as measured by their volume, and the cost will vary depending on the size. Before renting a dumpster, consider how much trash you will be getting rid of in order to appropriately size the unit. Also, it is important to ensure that the dumpster size you choose will fit in your driveway or wherever else you plan to place it. Here at Junk King we have several size dumpsters that are sized to work perfectly for different junk removal projects.
  2. Avoid overfilling: Another issue associated with properly sizing your dumpster is the threat of overfilling the dumpster you rent. For dumpsters that are loaded past their designated fill line, our junk removal trucks run the hazard of having the junk fall out as we transfer your items to the recycling and donation facilities with whom we work. If your dumpster is filled up and you still have more items to get rid of, you can also call our junk removal professionals for a designated pick up on a scheduled date. We can also provide you with a second dumpster rental if you have the space.
  3. Make sure to call ahead: During the summer, you´re most likely not going to be the only one looking for a dumpster rental. Businesses, construction companies, and other companies are also most likely looking for a dumpster rental at different times of the summer. Make sure to call ahead to reserve your dumpster for the days you will need it, and to also make sure that the correct size of dumpster will be available. You can call Junk King of San Francisco at 1 (415) 335-7970, or 1 (888)888-JUNK
  4. Make arrangements to place the dumpster accordingly: Depending on where you live, you might actually need a permit for placing your dumpster. If you don’t have a private driveway that is large enough to accommodate a dumpster, your neighborhood or local council might require a permit for placing the dumpster temporarily on the street. Even if you have large enough driveway, make sure that you have the exact location for its placement so that it doesn’t block traffic or your entrance into your garage.
  5. Do you have any prohibited items that are not able to be thrown into the dumpster? The dumpsters we rent here at Junk King are able to take on almost all types of construction debris, used furniture and appliances, and other household waste. However, by law, there are certain items such as toxic waste that cannot be placed in the dumpster. If you feel that there might be some questionable items on your “throw-away list,” you can call our customer service representatives to get a complete list of prohibited junk items.
  6. The threat of illegal dumping: One of the problems associated with renting a dumpster is that it could turn into a public trash service for your neighbors or other passers-by. If you place your dumpster on a street corner or some other accessible place where anyone can access it, there is the chance that you might find your dumpster being filled up with other people´s trash items. To avoid this type of illegal dumping, think about the best place for locating your dumpster rental where it will be less noticeable to people trying to find a way to get rid of their old refrigerator taking up space in their garage. Also, only keep the dumpster on your property for as long as you need it. You may even consider covering the dumpster with a tarp when you are not home to discourage people from illegal dumping.

Junk Pickup in San Francisco: Help to Make Landfills a Thing of the Past

Reducing the amount of waste we send to landfills is one of the most important and pressing environmental responsibilities that all of us share. For residents of San Francisco, the combined efforts of citizens, businesses, and local governments have made major progress in reducing the amount of trash that is generated on a yearly basis. In fact, according to a recent article published on CNBC, “San Francisco sends less trash to landfills than any other major U.S. city… The average American produces about 4.4 pounds of waste per day. Thanks to bold public policy and educational initiatives, the city diverts about 80 percent of its waste from landfills, or more than 1.5 million tons every year.”

Eighty percent less trash is certainly a major achievement, and something that other cities and regions across North America should similarly aspire towards. However, the collective effort to make landfills a thing of the past, requires the dedication and commitment from every individual. While public policies, ordinances, and laws can certainly help to move us towards a zero trash future, the decision to generate less waste ultimately lays with individuals, homeowners, and business owners across the city. In this short article, we look at some of the problems that arise with the amount of trash we collectively generate. We will then outline a few ways in which individuals and businesses can contribute to San Francisco´s goal of making landfills obsolete.

The Problems with Waste Accumulation

So why exactly should we care about where our trash ends up? For starters, landfill space around the country is growing increasingly scarce. In California, as in most states across the country, the number of closed landfills vastly outnumbers the numbers of operational landfills. Furthermore, many states and regions simply are not able to find sufficient space to open new landfills to take in the waste streams that are generated on a daily basis. Statistically, the United States produces a world-leading 250 million tons of trash each and every year. That amounts to roughly 4.4 pounds of trash per person per day. When the operational landfills that we currently rely on eventually fill up, finding ways to safely dispose of this amount of waste is certainly going to present a pressing problem.

Furthermore, due to the limited landfill space available, many waste management companies have reverted to burning our trash. While this does create a source of energy (it is debatable as to whether this is an environmentally friendly or renewable source of energy), it also contributes to air pollution problems. In fact, one recent analysis by the Institute for Local Self Reliance finds that waste incinerators which burn trash releases huge amounts of dioxin, lead, and mercury, all of which pose serious health problems to nearby communities. Of course, these incinerators, also create greenhouse gas emissions including both biogenic sources and carbon dioxide and hazardous ash, which could fall on farmland or water sources for even further contamination issues.

Lastly, much of the waste that we create doesn’t end up in landfills or eventually get burned, but rather ends up in our oceans. Not too far off the coast of San Francisco is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Recent studies have found that this massive collection of garbage that has been swept into the ocean measures more than 1.6 million square kilometers. The ocean currents in the Pacific collect an enormous amount of plastic and other human-generated waste, and air surveys of the patch suggest that the plastics are increasing exponentially, and that there could be 16 times as much as previously thought

The Importance of Reuse and Upcycling

So if you don’t want your waste to end up in increasingly scarce landfills, or to be burned and contribute to air pollution and toxic ash, or end up polluting the ocean ecosystems, what exactly can you do? Recycling has generated a lot of fanfare in recent years, and is certainly one way to help deal with the waste accumulation problem. However, China and other Asian countries have recently stopped accepting the massive amount of trash that the United States and other countries have been “exporting” to them. This has actually led many major cities across the country to cut back on their recycling programs.

The city of San Francisco, in order to progress its stated goal of becoming “zero waste” is now turning towards “re-using” its trash instead of recycling it. Known as “upcycling,” the idea is to find ways to reuse discarded objects or material in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original. For example, instead of throwing away your old wine bottles or putting them in the recycle bin, “upcycling” would focus on turning those old wine bottles into something of higher values, such as a unique, artisanal chandelier. Similarly, turning old tires into an outdoor dining table is another solution.

Practical Steps We All Can Take to Limit Waste Accumulation

Currently in the city of San Francisco, of the city’s annual 900,000 tons of discarded material, it actually diverts more for reuse than it sends to landfills. Though this is laudable progress, the city is still a long ways away from becoming zero waste. The original goal was to become zero waste by 2020 which was missed by a long shot. However, all sectors of society in San Francisco are helping to do their part to continue to divert waste from landfills, incinerators, and the ocean.

On a policy level, the city of San Francisco has banned single-use plastic bags and other hard-to-recycle items. It is also continually searching for new markets for recyclable plastics after China stopped accepting shipments. The curbside recycling and composting program continues to be expanded to the population.

Individuals across the country are also contributing to limiting waste streams. Most residents and businesses owners in the city of San Francisco faithfully separate their trash for pickup: black for trash, blue for recycling and green for compost.

But what about those larger items that simply don’t fit into one of the three bins? Or what about the dozens of bags of waste items that appear after a deep spring cleaning? Fortunately, Junk King of San Francisco is one local business that is dedicated to helping individuals and businesses in San Francisco responsible deal with their large or bulky waste items.

bulk item and trash removal

The company started in San Francisco back in 2005, and has played a fundamental role in helping the city move towards its zero waste goals. Junk King San Francisco has developed close relationships with dozens of recycling centers, thrift stores, non-profit organizations, and other interested parties in order to help reuse, recycle or upcycle your waste items. In fact, we are able to recycle or upcycle around 60 percent of the junk that we pick up.

Junk King makes it extremely easy for companies and businesses of San Francisco to responsibly get rid of their large and bulky trash items. Simply call us for a free quotation or send us a text with photos of the items you need removed. We´ll send you a free quote, and once we have agreed upon a price and a two-hour window for pickup, our professional furniture removal staff will send you a text 15-30 minutes before arrival to let you know we´re on our way. We´ll do all the heavy hauling, so you simply have to let us know which pieces of furniture you want to get rid of and we´ll do the rest!

Dumpster Rental Vs. Junk Removal in San Francisco

If you are planning a major home remodel, or are taking spring cleaning to a whole new level with a major de-clutter, you need to start thinking NOW about what you are going to do with the waste that you collect. Even relatively minor home renovations often lead to a significant amount of construction and demolition (C&D debris) being accumulated. In 2018, Americans generated around 600 million tons of C&D debris, which is more than double the amount of municipal solid waste (MSW). If your home renovations will lead you to getting rid of some old furniture or appliances in favor of newer and more efficient models, those large, bulky items will take up even more space in the growing trash pile.

bulk item and trash removal

While most people think that the “last order of business” with any renovation or de-clutter is dealing with the waste collected, planning ahead can help you avoid a series of problems. If you live in relatively cramped quarters, not having a destined spot for putting the junk and waste that you collect can actually delay or hinder the renovation process. Also, if you are planning on simply storing the trash in your driveway or front yard, you´ll probably get some odd looks from the neighbors.

Sidewalk dumping not only can make neighborhoods look unsightly, but is costly to the taxpayers and can present safety hazards by obstructing pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. Depending on what is left on the curb, you might also be attracting vermin, bacteria and mold, not exactly a neighborly thing to do. Even temporarily placing your bulky trash and junk items on the curb can lead to expensive fines. In the city of San Francisco, the Public Works Department states: “It is illegal to leave furniture, appliances, garbage bags, or anything on the sidewalk at any time unless you have a scheduled pick up from a licensed hauler or donation facility.”

free guide - transform your garage

Instead of illegal dumping or trying to store all of the accumulated waste in your garage, what other options to businesses or individuals have when doing a major home retrofit or de-clutter? Renting a dumpster or planning ahead for professional junk removal are two strategies that can help you quickly, easily, and efficiently deal with the excess junk items that result from any major home or business renovation. In this short article, we look at when dumpster rental is the best option for business owners or homeowners, and when it makes more sense to simply call a junk removal service.

When to Rent a Dumpster

A dumpster rental generally makes sense for people when they are going through a long, drawn-out renovation or de-clutter process where junk and waste will slowly accumulate over several days or weeks. For example, let´s say that you have hired a green contracting company to help you make a complete energy efficiency retrofit of your home. Over the course of several weeks, the company will most likely replace certain parts of your home´s insulation, upgrade to more efficient HVAC equipment, and maybe even replace your old, single pane windows with more efficient double or triple pane options.

Click Here To Book A MINI Dumpster Today!

The end result will be lower energy bills for long-term savings. However, the process of improving the energy efficiency and thermal performance of your home will most likely take several weeks, at best. If the home had a spacious driveway or expansive backyard, a dumpster rental would most likely make the most sense as it would offer an option for safely storing the accumulated waste until the energy efficiency renovations were finished.

Dumpster rentals tend to be the most affordable option for dealing with large amounts of trash. If you have a trailer and a heavy duty pickup, you might even be able to haul away the dumpster´s accumulated contents once the job is finished. Even if you plan to hire a junk removal company to get rid of the dumpster contents at the end of the renovations, you can expect to pay less for one large junk removal service rather than several smaller jobs.

While dumpster rentals can be an efficient and affordable way to deal with waste, you need to first ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I have enough space in my yard or driveway to put the dumpster? If a dumpster is going to be blocking you (or your neighbor´s) car from getting in and out, and dumpster rental probably isn’t the best option.
  • Will you be accumulating any sort of hazardous waste? Local disposal ordinances in San Francisco prohibit some types of debris from being thrown away in either dumpster rentals or your regular trash can. Some of these hazardous options include batteries, paint, tires, gasoline, railroad tires, and other materials with potentially toxic substances that could leach into the surrounding area. If you are not sure if your renovation or de-clutter process might contain prohibited items, you can call Junk King San Francisco today to clear up any doubts you might have.  Dumpster rentals are usually best for completely non-toxic waste materials such as normal construction debris, household waste like furniture, yard debris, and roofing debris.
  • Are there any other regulations, ordinances, or laws that might make impede a dumpster rental in your region? You can read a detailed explanation of the ordinance regulating the placement of dumpster rentals and debris boxes in San Francisco here.

When to Hire a Professional Junk Removal Service

Junk Removal services tend to be the best option for quick renovations or de-clutters where lots of waste is accumulated in a short amount of time. With professional junk removal you don’t have to worry about where to store the excess waste, what your neighbors might think or say, or whether or not you are infringing on some local ordinance that might result in a fine. Also, hiring a junk removal service means that you won´t have to do any of the heavy lifting, as you simply have to point to the junk items that you need removed. This “hands-free” junk removal service is obviously best for people who do not have the physical stamina to be taking heavy waste items out to the dumpster you´ve rented and placed at the end of your driveway.

Whereas a dumpster rental will usually take several days to totally get rid of your waste, professional junk removal generally only takes a couple of hours at most. With Junk King of San Francisco, you can simply text us an image of what you need removed and we´ll text back a price estimate. Once you´ve agreed upon the price, we´ll give you the nearest two-hour window for pickup, and will notify you 15-30 minutes before we arrive.

Lastly, junk removal is usually the best option for extremely bulky items such as large furniture and appliances that simply won´t fit in a dumpster.

Furniture Removal Services in San Francisco: What You Need to Know

At some point in all our lives, getting rid of bulky, used furniture will be a task that all of us will have to deal with. Even with careful maintenance, the average sofa will probably only last between 7 and 15 years. This means that we probably renew the furniture of our home´s interior several times during our lifetime. But what exactly should we do with the old couches, scratched dining room tables, and antique lamps that we no longer have room for in our homes? Junk King San Francisco is the top rated junk removal service in the Bay area and can help San Francisco residents quickly and affordably get rid of their used furniture in an environmentally friendly manner.

The Environmental Problems that Come with Used Furniture

Did you know that every year American throw away around 9.8 million tons of old and used furniture items? From that lumpy mattress affecting your sleep to that ugly sectional sofa that you used to have stored in your unfinished basement, more than 4 percent of household waste is made up of used furniture items. While most of us probably do not throw away furniture on a daily basis, the sheer weight and bulk of furniture makes it an enormous contributor to the total amount of waste that we produce.

Unfortunately, used furniture is one of the least-recycled items in a household. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), only about 0.1 percent of the materials that make up our furniture eventually gets recycled. The other 99.9 percent ends up in landfills or incinerators, causing major environmental damage.

New call-to-action

However, as landfill space grows increasingly scarce, many organizations are making an effort to increase the percentage of recycled or refurbished furniture. The global technology research firm Technavio reports that the recycled office furniture market in the United States will reach $2.68 billion by 2020. Similar trends are happening for household furniture products as well. The EPA reports that the recycling of used furniture products has quadrupled over the past decade, and the amount of used furniture that is donated to thrift stores and other non-profit organizations is also continuing to rise.

In 2015, people across the country spent an estimated $121.7 billion to re-furbish our homes with new furniture. New furniture not only increases the comfort of the homes we live in, but can also quickly increase the property value of our houses. What we do with the furniture we get rid of, however, can have a lasting environmental impact.

So what exactly does all this mean for homeowners, business owners, and other residents of San Francisco? First of all, it is important to understand that it is illegal to leave furniture, appliances, garbage bags, or anything on the sidewalk at any time unless you have a scheduled pick up from a licensed hauler or donation facility. Recology, the company that provides collection and disposal of municipal solid waste, recycling, and organics/compost to commercial and residential customers in the state of California, only offers two curbside bulky item recycling collections per year. Also, if you are planning a complete remodel of your home, you most likely will not be able to simply send out to the curb the dozens of pieces of furniture you are wanting to get rid of.

bulk item and trash removal

Fortunately, Junk King of San Francisco offers efficient and affordable furniture removal services for residents, homeowners, and business owners of San Francisco. While you could haul your old couch out to the curb and place a “free” sign in hopes that somebody might come and pick it up, chances are that you would be rewarded with a hefty fine before anyone actually removed the thing. Junk King of San Francisco can help you avoid the headache of self-hauling your used furniture to the nearest collection facility. With a simple phone call or text, we can set up a time and date to come and help you get free up space in your home by getting rid of your used furniture items.

The Complete Guide To Appliance Removal Services in San Francisco

appliance removal services san francisco

Have you ever stopped to consider where all of the trash that you throw away eventually ends up? Across the United States, there are at least 2,000 active landfills that receive, process and bury the trash that we send out to our curbs for the garbage truck to carry away. Of the roughly 254 million tons of waste that Americans throw out every year, a little bit more than half of that ends up in those landfills across the country. In the United States, we produce about 30 percent of the world´s trash, despite only making up around 4 percent of the world´s population.

Finding ways to move towards a “zero-waste” society, then, is one of the pressing environmental challenges that we face. On an individual level, there are fortunately several things that we can all do to help reduce the amount of waste we create. Starting a backyard compost heap to process our kitchen scraps, leftover meals, and yard waste is one simple strategy to reduce the amount of trash we send out to the curb every week. By simply separating our organic and inorganic wastes, we are also helping to drastically reduce the methane emissions emitted at local landfills, which result from the combination of organic and inorganic residues. Also, cutting back on single-use plastics and packaging is another way to move towards the ideal zero-waste society.

In the case of larger pieces of trash such as refrigerators, televisions, and other appliances, however, finding ways to recycle or repurpose these items can be a bit more difficult. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that around 9 million refrigerators and freezers are thrown out in the United States every year. On top of that, millions of other household appliances also eventually end up taking up an enormous amount of space in landfills around the country each year.

Fortunately, there are several different ways to properly and safely get rid of your used appliances in an environmentally friendly manner. At Junk King San Francisco we are the top-rated junk removal company in the Bay Area because we strive to help individuals, homeowners, business owners, and large industries get rid of all of their bulky items in an efficient, resourceful, and affordable manner.

What Is an Appliance Removal Service, and How Do They Work?

Appliance Removal

Appliance removal service refers to moving old appliances from one point to another. It is also finding new life for appliances that you no longer use. Old appliances don’t only refer to those no longer working — you could have a functioning appliance, but you don’t use it, making it junk. For instance, if you get a new dryer, you can always find a new home for the old one!

What makes appliance removal a challenge is that most appliance removal processes are never DIY projects. It is almost impossible for one person to move large appliances by themselves. Even if you get a neighbor or friend to help you, you will still need specialized equipment like furniture straps and hand trucks to move it. Getting these specialized moving equipment is challenging, putting the entire removal process at risk.

You might successfully move your appliance out of your home, but transporting it to its new destination is another problem. This is because appliances removal needs a suitable vehicle for maximum efficiency. You will agree that moving a large fridge on your truck is risky and puts your safety in danger. Therefore, you will need established appliance removal services in San Francisco for reliable movement. At Junk King, we know what it takes to move old appliances from one point to another safely. We have the skills, workforce, and equipment needed to do so.

Getting a Gist of Appliance Upgrades

Do you know the number of large appliances purchased annually? The numbers seem to increase annually since over 600,000 new homes were built in 2016. According to the US Census Bureau, over 865,000 newly constructed homes were sold in the US in 2020. Furthermore, it is common for new homeowners to upgrade or replace old appliances in their new homes. This means there are high chances of having old appliances loitering around your home.

The increasing number of old appliances doesn’t consider the ongoing need for property managers and homeowners to replace broken or old appliances. Statistics show that the U.S. spent over $420 billion in 2020 on home appliances. Even though it is not apparent that the new appliances will replace old ones, it is common sense that most of them will. This means there is a significant amount of appliance removal happening in the country.

Getting Rid of Your Junk Appliances

junk king appliance removal

Appliance disposal in San Francisco starts with getting rid of your old junk appliance from your apartment, house, or office. This is only the first step. After that, it is essential to figure out where the junk will go. In most locations, landfills are not a good option. In fact, most states in the country have laws prohibiting the dumping of old appliances in landfills. At Junk King, we give you reliable solutions when getting rid of your junk appliances. Here is how you can handle your junk appliances.

  • Consider Donating

While this might not be a popular option, donating junk items is often a great approach. It helps you find new homes for your old appliances. Most non-profit groups, second-hand shops, community thrift stores, and churches are willing to accept junk appliances if they are in good condition. Even better, many of these organizations will offer to pick them up for you. Donating will get you a receipt, something you can use to get tax deductions.

  • Consider Selling

The demand for working but used appliances is continually increasing. This means you can sell your old appliance at half or less than the original price. You can get these lucrative offers through garage sales or sell them on online platforms like Letgo or Craigslist. Getting any amount of money for your old appliances is beneficial because you could have easily thrown them away.

  • Scrap the Appliance

You can also scrap the appliance at a used local appliance dealer, who will give you something in return. Alternatively, you can work with a scrap metal dealer that will pay you to acquire the old appliances. This option is ideal for appliances that are no longer working. Old appliance dealer shops will repair and re-sell the appliances, dismantle them to cover up damaged parts or sell some parts to recyclable materials.

Is It Possible To Recycle Old Appliances?

Recycling San Francisco

At Junk King, we are committed to delivering environmentally friendly appliance hauling service San Francisco. This means that we will recycle as many items as possible. You don’t have to haul your old appliances to the dump when you can get high-quality services from us. Being an experienced junk removal company, we can help you get rid of your refrigerator, dishwater, oven, stove, dryer and washer, range, and even old HVAC system equipment. We do that in an eco-friendly manner that doesn’t affect the environment in any way.

We don’t just haul away your old appliances; we recycle them. You might already know that most appliances, especially kitchen and laundry appliances, are primarily made of metal. This means that these metals are highly recoverable and recyclable. However, you need an established junk removal company to help you process scrap metal. This goes a long way in helping you remove old appliances safely.

How Can I Safely Get Rid of My Used Appliances?

Despite the obvious hazards associated with improper disposal of household appliances, there are certainly times when upgrading to a newer model of different types of appliances is necessary and warranted. Every appliance will eventually give out and die, and most newer models of appliances are significantly more energy-efficient. When it is time to say goodbye to that old refrigerator or TV, finding a junk removal company that makes every effort to donate or recycle your used appliances should be your first priority.

The State of California has a Certified Appliance Recycle (CAR) Program. Because California law requires that appliances, and certain materials within appliances, be properly handled, the state certifies different recycling agencies to ensure that all hazardous and toxic materials are handled in a healthy and environmentally responsible manner.

For residents of San Francisco, California, Junk King San Francisco has been offering superior junk removal service since 2005. The company has hands-down the best customer service in the San Francisco Bay Area and we are proud to have a 5-star rating on Yelp. At Junk King San Francisco, we maintain a solid relationship with the dozens of state-certified appliance recyclers in the Bay Area and we try to donate all used appliances that are still in usable condition. Unlike other junk removal companies, the company makes every effort to recycle or donate your used appliances.

The Environmental and Health Implications of Proper Disposal of Used Appliances

The vast majority of municipal garbage services across the country have some sort of policy or ordinance that prohibits homeowners from throwing away their used appliances with regular household trash. In the city of San Francisco, it is actually illegal to take your used furniture, appliances, or other bulky items out to the sidewalk. According to the San Francisco Public Works office “sidewalk dumping can result in citations and fines unless you have a scheduled pick up from a licensed hauler or donation facility.”

Why exactly is it illegal in San Francisco (and so many other localities) to attempt to send your used appliances to the county dump? For starters, some appliances might be filled with chemical substances and materials that are extremely harmful to the surrounding environment. The refrigerant material used in refrigerators, for example, either use CFCs (for fridges built before 1995), or HFCs (more recent models). Both CFCs and HFCs are known to be ozone-depleting substances. When released, they also act as a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Studies have shown that HFCs actually have a global warming potential (GWP) that is anywhere between 50 and 14,000 times as high as carbon dioxide! Many of the foam insulation products used in refrigerators also contain high amounts of CFCs or HFCs that are subsequently released into the atmosphere when improperly disposed of.

Furthermore, some refrigerator models might also include trace amounts of heavy metals such as mercury that could potentially leach into surrounding soils and even contaminate water sources. Perhaps even more worrisome, refrigerators that were manufactured before 1980 most likely contain large amounts of PCBs or polychlorinated biphenyls in their capacitors.  Studies of the effects of PCBs in humans have found increased rates of melanomas, liver cancer, gall bladder cancer, biliary tract cancer, gastrointestinal tract cancer, and brain cancer, and may be linked to breast cancer. Furthermore, PCBs can also accumulate in aquatic ecosystems, potentially making it dangerous to eat fish and other seafood. Not exactly what you want when living next to the ocean.

Other common household appliances can also potentially leak dangerous substances into the surrounding soil and groundwater, including chlorine, fluorine, used oil, refrigerants, and beryllium. Electronic appliances such as TVs, sound systems are now classified as e-waste, which comes with its own set of hazards when landfilled. E-waste most likely contains high levels of toxic components that are dangerous to human health, such as mercury, lead, cadmium, polybrominated flame retardants, barium, and lithium. Just as with PCBs, the negative health effects of these toxins in e-waste can include brain, heart, liver, kidney, and skeletal system damage.

Finding Easy Furniture Removal in San Francisco

furniture removal san francisco

Many of those over the age of 40 or so might remember the days when hefting a piece of furniture wasn’t a big deal. In fact, some guys could probably pick up a recliner or dining room table by themselves.

The rest of us were content to hold the doors open!

However, when you’ve gotten older, or the furniture happens to be a sofa or large credenza, lifting it yourself isn’t really feasible. And moving old furniture out of the house and into the back of a truck? Forget it!

But if you live in or near San Francisco – as more than 880,000 people do – getting rid of furniture is something that has to happen every once in a while.

This is why Junk King San Francisco offers furniture removal services.

Please Take My Couch

With apologies to Henny Youngman, this is a true sentiment for many folks. From the Richmond District to Golden Gate Heights, and from the Mission District to Russian Hill, people are getting rid of old, unwanted furniture.

And it’s not always easy.

In fact, if you can’t sell your old furniture pieces – or they’re not in good enough shape to sell – and you’re not able to donate them, you’ve still got to find a way to get rid of them. For most folks this means hauling them away somewhere.

But what does that entail exactly?

Kitchen chairs, dining room tables, recliners, sofas, and bookcases take up a lot of room in a vehicle. And you have to get them out of the house or apartment first. This can be challenging if you have stairs – and who doesn’t in the City?

And once you get your old furniture pieces, or pieces, outside you still have to figure out what to do with them. You can’t just leave them out on the curb, as tempting as that might be. In fact, it’s quite illegal, unlawful, and simply bad form to leave an old couch abandoned somewhere.

Even if you do put a sign on it that reads: “FREE”

So, you need to get your hands on a truck or large cargo van then haul it all to a waste transfer station someplace.

Seriously – there has to be an easier way!

And there is when you call Junk King San Francisco.

Furniture Removal for San Francisco Doesn’t Have to be Hard, Does It?

Unfortunately, there are people who dump their old furniture on the side of a road, in empty lots, and sometimes they simply dump them in front of a thrift store.

Yes, it’s unlawful, but if no one sees it happen then nothing further happens. Yet, no one likes having old, broken-down furniture or mattresses lying abandoned in their neighborhood, either.

Debris, junk, and old furniture can bring down the overall quality and safety of a residential block as well as contribute to a rise in crime, according to numerous studies

Trying to transport old furniture is a challenge, especially if you don’t own a truck or know someone who does and is willing to help you. Once loaded into a suitable vehicle, however, you still have to know where to take your old furniture and be ready to pay whatever the fee is for that waste management facility.

While you might still be able to simply dump your old furniture items at a transfer station or an actual landfill (if you can find one), it’s a far better solution to have your unwanted furniture recycled if it can’t be reused or repurposed.

According to an article at RecycleNow.com,

“Furniture at the end of its useful life can often be recycled, especially items made from wood and metal.”

However, this is a somewhat ambiguous topic since so many wood furniture items are made of material that has been chemically treated in some way or another.

A post from Recycle Nation describes it well,

“End tables, coffee tables, bookshelves, dining room chairs and the like all have one thing in common: They are made of treated wood. That makes them difficult, if not impossible, to recycle. The main uses for recycled wood are compost, garden amendments like mulch or burning it for energy.

The chemicals in varnishes, paints and other wood treatment products make your old furniture a bad candidate for all those applications. More and more furniture items are made with less-expensive particleboard and chipboard, but these products fall in the nonrecyclable category as well.”

However, there are other ways to dispose of these items that do not involve simply tossing them into a landfill.

Our Office Furniture Removal Process is “Green” Furniture Removal

Too many junk removal companies operate with the end goal of taking as much as possible to the nearest landfill. And, while it may seem to be quicker and more efficient, it’s certainly not the way we do things here at Junk King San Francisco.

In fact, our junk disposal process involves taking the junk and trash that we’ve picked up from you, including your unwanted furniture, and transporting it all to our local Junk King warehouse.

Once there, it is all meticulously sorted through. We do this because most of the items can either be reused, repurposed, or at least recycled.

When it comes to furniture, most items are constructed with a variety of materials, and many pieces like stuffed chairs, couches or credenzas need to be dismantled. The good news is that many of the materials are easily recycled such as the plastics and most of the wood.

While there are other products such as certain foam padding materials that require special handling, all of the steel and aluminum parts can be used as scrap metal, and even all the solid wood furniture can be easily recycled.

At Junk King, it has always been our corporate mission to recycle as much of your waste and junk items as possible since the company was founded in 2005. Looking For Space – More Office Space Actually

Back in 1975 when John Denver was singing about finding himself, this was somewhat of a stirring and uplifting sentiment. Today, not so much.

According to one source

“Data issued by the US Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that 4.7 million people, which make about 3.4% of the US workforce, were already working remotely before the novel coronavirus took the world by storm.”

And even more will join them permanently even after the latest wave of virtual workers are herded back to their corporate cubicles. Statista reported,

“25% of respondent companies will move 10% of their employees to permanent remote positions post-COVID 19.”

With so many people transitioning to a “work from home” lifestyle, finding sufficient space and privacy in many homes is a challenge. And, with all the changes often comes a change of equipment and furnishings.

This often means that when the new stuff comes in, the old stuff has to go out. And, when the old stuff is office furniture, removing and disposing of it all can be a challenge.

Office chairs, desks, file cabinets, bookcases, and printer stands are hard to fit into a Prius or MINI Cooper. And leaving them out on the curb for someone to take isn’t really practical in the City. So, getting rid of old, unwanted office furniture is now a growing problem in cities like San Francisco.

And not just for the WFH folks who are busy working in their business casual tops and flannel pajama bottoms!

There are plenty of businesses that, although they have managed to stay afloat in the onslaught of economic chaos, stay-at-home orders, government shutdowns, and just the general craziness of the previous year, have still found themselves downsizing.

And, of course, there are those businesses that, tragically, have closed down as a result of all this.

And downsizing or minimizing space often means getting rid of excess equipment and furnishings – similar problems but for different reasons.

Office Furniture Removal for San Francisco

If your company is busy “emptying cubicles by the Bay” and your job is to find the best solution for office furniture removal, you are probably looking for something quick and easy.

Or, if you are newly working from home and have had to get rid of your old furniture in order to make room for your new furniture, it’s also your job to find the best solution for office furniture removal. And you probably also want some method that is quick and easy.

Good news: Junk King San Francisco has the solution you need.

Assuming you have either been unable to or have decided not to even try to, sell or donate your old office furniture, removing them yourself can be rough. For businesses with employees, it may be tempting to rent a truck and press them into service as furniture movers and junk haulers.

But it’s not cost-effective nor efficient. And probably not even safe.

With health protocols, social distancing, huffing and puffing through a mask while grappling with heavy furniture, this isn’t an ideal DIY project for anyone. In fact, taking care of your own office furniture removal is probably much more than most people can or want to do.

However, you can easily hire a professional firm to do all the heavy lifting for you and haul it all away so you can avoid this task.

In fact, outsourcing for professional and reliable office furniture removal is actually a smart business decision.

And calling Junk King San Francisco to pick up your old office furniture makes great sense because there’s simply no easy way to get rid of it yourself especially in San Francisco! Best of all, Junk King will provide you with an efficient, safe, and eco-friendly furniture removal service so you don’t need to worry about the pickup or disposal of your old office items.

Not only that, but we also make sure that your old furniture items end up in the right place: whether it be a charity if the pieces of furniture are still in good shape for a donation or a recycling facility to ensure your furniture is disposed of in an eco-friendly way.

We have always done this, and we continue to work to protect the planet and provide a sustainable alternative to landfills. Our trained and licensed crew even operates a fleet of bio-diesel trucks for many of our jobs.
