Getting ready for the summer season involves a bit of a cleanup especially for the backyard that might have taken a beating in the past couple of months. What shape are your plants in? You might want to put in some fresh vegetable or herb plants. If you’re worried about what type of soil you’ve got in your backyard then forego digging into the ground and think about some above ground planters. These come in all shapes and sizes and could have your mini-garden up and running in no time.
What shape is your patio in? A patio with tiles always has the potential for cracks appearing around the edges. This is a result of water seeping into a small crack and causing a bigger crack. Obviously this is a bigger problem for states with harsher winters when that seeping water freezes and busts up the tile. Beyond your deck, you might be looking at your patio furniture and wondering if it is time to replace them. Perhaps a more economical solution would be to merely strip them down and repaint. Just make sure you’re buying weatherproof paint.
Finally, the biggest issue for many Sacramento residents would be what shape is your grill in? Like those other items that live outdoors, your grill has probably taken a beaten during the winter. Maybe not this past years but over the years is will simply be worn down. If you’re looking into buying a new grill you’ll be faced with that age old choice of “charcoal or gas?” Well, this summer you’re in for a treat because a new grill designed by Hayneedle not only has charcoal and gas but also has its own smoker. It’s a three for one deal that will let you BBQ anyway you want to!
If that is too much to handle, you could go for a standard propane grill that is easy to clean and maintain. Great features on the new models are side burners for things like pots of beans or boiling water for corn or potatoes. For the serious outdoor griller there is even a model with six burners and 800 inches of grilling space. That’s room for a lot of ribs!
Naturally, getting a new grill means getting rid of the old one. Just as with those other summer clean up chores, you can find a big help by hiring a team of professional junk haulers like Junk King Sacramento. This is a crew that can show up in your backyard ready, willing and able to remove anything you want taken away. Think of this as the proverbial clearing of the decks. Once all that old junk is gone you can rethink where you might want to put those planters or patio furniture. You’ll also have plenty of options for the placement of your new grill no matter what size it is!
Unsustainable. That is the fear of many folks as they at the current economy. We just can’t continue to spend money we don’t take in. But could that same idea of un-sustainability be applied to your own situation? Are you living in an unsustainable environment? If so, it might be time to downsize.
According to a recent article in the Sacramento Bee, when Kyle Truitt was helping his friend, Josh Cox, move into a new home they became frustrated with all those cardboard boxes they needed to do the packing and moving. Because these friends were dedicated recyclers they wondered if there could be an alternative.
You might not think that being out in nature requires an eco-friendly recycling program but no area in Sacramento should be exempt from going green. As part of their successful “Plastics. Too Valuable to Waste. Recycle” campaign, the America’s plastic makers who make up the American Chemistry Council (ACC) recently announced a partnership with the American River Natural History Association. As part of this new eco-friendly team, visitors to the Effie Yeaw Nature Center with now have an abundance of recycling options in the form of six recycling bins now situated throughout the park. With this effort, the American River Parkway in Sacramento will be that much brighter and cleaner.
On any given day you might find dozens of folks running the stairs over at Hughes Stadium or the Sacramento City College Stadium. They’re not looking for the best seats for the next big game. Instead, they’re indulging in a perfect workout routine: running stairs. Going up and down stairs has long been considered a great way to get in a little extra exercise. If you don’t believe that stair climbing is a good exercise then why does every gym have a Stair Master machine? If you have the opportunity at your workplace, you’ll probably a lot better off taking the stairs every day than the elevator. Of course, this is not meant to sky scrapers!
Let’s cut right to the chase: it’s spring in Sacramento and it’s time for you to get cleaning! We’re not talking about the light dusting or occasional countertop wipe down but instead that once a year complete cleaning that leaves your house sparkling like new. As you approach this year’s spring cleaning mission here are some helpful hints that you might not have considered.
The Environmental Protection Agency is chock full of all kinds of facts and figures regarding how Americans dispose of things. For instance, the EPA has found that over 290 million automobile tires are tossed away by Americans every year. That’s a lot of a rubber! The good news is that 80% of those tires are being recycled, repurposed and reused. So just where could your recycled tire end up?
Over at a East Sacramento Catholic high school a group of students have gotten together to show what a little ingenuity and the power of the sun can do for their school. It was a group of students from the St. Francis high school that became involved in the school’s effort to save money on rising energy bills by adopting solar power as an alternative source for the campus. Thanks to their effort they were able to install a 253 kW solar energy supply system across seven buildings on the campus. This is going to reduce the energy bills and have a positive impact on the local environment. It’s also perfect example of how our kids often lead the way.
