The Solid Waste Services of Raleigh offers residents a Bulky Load Collection. But there are some rules to follow. Here’s how they spell it out on their website:
“A Bulky Load at a single address is limited to four (4) cubic yards, which is equivalent to filling the bed of a standard-size pickup truck. To maintain the efficiency of our crews, please accumulate several items prior to scheduling this special collection. Yard waste, large appliances, computers and televisions are not included in Bulky Load as these items are banned from landfill disposal. Excess bags of garbage that would normally be put in the garbage cart will not be collected. No odor-causing waste will be collected. You must call ahead to schedule a Bulky Load Collection. A collection for a specific address can be scheduled no more often than every 90 days. Once your collection has been arranged, place all items at the curb as Solid Waste Services employees will not enter your yard to collect items for disposal. Items placed at curbside without scheduling ahead for a bulky load collection will not be picked up by regular garbage, recycling or yard waste collection crews, and are subject to or will be assessed administrative fees and civil penalties according to Section 7 of Raleigh City Code.”
Also take note that this service isn’t provided to anyone living in an apartment or a community that has a dumpster for their garbage collection. Kind of restrictive don’t you think? Surely, they mean well and can only do so much but they certainly don’t leave a lot of wiggle room when it comes to variables. Like suppose the junk you want to get rid of is bigger than 4 cubic yards? Does that mean you’ll have to wait another 90 days before you can get it picked up? What about that part of having to drag everything down to the curb? Yes, that works when you take out the weekly garbage but if you’re tossing out an old fridge or couch you’re not going to be able to easily get that item down to the street.

When was the last time you went shopping for furniture? Most of us have bedroom sets or living room sets we’ve been using for years. Are those sofas beginning to sag? Is your dresser worn out? If you’re looking for a good bargain for furniture you might want to give the Riverview Galleries a shot. They are an independently owned store that has been in operation since 1972. That makes them a true Raleigh fixture.
What exactly does it take for a city to be green? Actually, it’s just what you would expect. Included on the checklist of eco-friendly services that get high marks on the green scorecard are things like solar panel installation, bicycle repair, chemical-free house cleaning, organic catering, electronics recycling, chemical-free pest control, chemical-free carpet cleaning, sustainable interior design, green architects and home energy audits. Naturally, a curbside recycling program is also a big plus. Fortunately for residents of Raleigh, the city scores high marks on all counts.
There was a time not too long ago when the only method of getting rid of junk in Raleigh was to do it yourself. This was usually an all day affair. First you would have to make sure you had help. A trip to the dump yard means you were taking bulky items that can’t fit into your trashcan and that means you needed help lifting them. This was when you saw who your true friends were for sure! You would also have to have had a big enough truck to haul off what you’re dumping. Once again, it meant asking a friend for help because they had a big enough pickup.
What’s your favorite whirligig? Never heard of a whirligig? It might be that you’ve seen a whirligig you just don’t know that was its name. Whirligigs are wind-driven creations constructed from motor fans, cotton spindles and other recycled parts. Simply put, its junk turned into functioning art and they’re being built right here in Raleigh. Vollis Simpson is a local artist who has a warehouse in Lucama. There he supervises a crew of about 16 towards the creation of these sculptures; some of which stand as tall as 50 feet. And Vollis is 93 with no signs of slowing down. In fact, he is pushing to put the finishing touches on the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park schedule to open in Wilson sometime next year.
