What to Look for in the Best Junk Pickup Company in Long Beach

Reducing the amount of trash that each of us produces on a daily basis is an enormous challenge facing our society. In the city of Long Beach, CA, we generate around 368,000 tons of trash every year. To put that number into perspective, that is about the same weight of 2,500 large whales. Thousands of rotting whale carcasses on a beach would obviously cause a public outcry. Our everyday waste streams, however, are skillfully hidden from sight through innovative waste management techniques.

Unfortunately, most people don’t think twice about where their trash goes once it is picked up by the garbage truck.  Below we briefly outline some of the environmental challenges being faced in Long Beach, and then explain why Junk King Long Beach is the best bet for getting rid of your trash in a safest, most environmental, and most efficient way possible.

The Environmental Problems with Waste Disposal in Long Beach

Unlike most places around the country, the vast majority of trash that is collected throughout the city of Long Beach is sent to the city’s Southeast Resource Recovery Facility (SERRF). This “waste-to-energy” plant burns upwards of 1,300 tons of trash that is collected daily, and subsequently sells that electricity to local electric companies.

Though this may qualify as a non-carbon polluting energy source on some records, the waste incineration plant also creates several other environmental and health hazards. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), waste incineration plants around the country have been linked to higher levels of:

  • Air pollutants such as particulate matter, which cause lung and heart diseases.
  • Heavy metals such as lead and mercury, which cause neurological diseases.
  • Toxic chemicals, such as PFAS and dioxins, which cause cancer and other health problems.

Furthermore, a recent report by the Long Beach Post News finds that our local waste incineration plant may be “exacerbating the public health risks for Long Beach residents who are also exposed to emissions from the ports and freeways.”

In the coming years, the SERRF waste incineration plant may be scaled down or even closed completely due to some of the serious health and environmental effects. However, finding ways to responsibly and sustainably deal with our waste streams will continue to be an ongoing issue.

The City of Long Beach has been actively trying to find ways to reduce the amount of waste that is either incinerated or sent to the landfill. A 2017 ordinance required certain construction and demolition projects to recycle at least 65 percent of the waste generated. Combined with a progressive recycling program, Long Beach today has one of the highest waste diversion rates in the nation.

Despite these advances, the City says that “as our City’s population grows and landfill space fills up and we recognize the effects that trash, toxic materials, and litter have on our environment and quality of life, it becomes more and more important for our City to effectively manage our own waste by reusing, recycling, and disposing in the most environmentally friendly way possible.”

  • A proven commitment to green business practices: Most junk removal companies will simply take their waste to the nearest landfill, or in the case of Long Beach, the nearest incineration facility. To reduce your waste footprint, however, it is important to find companies with a proven commitment to recycling, donating, and reusing the majority of junk that they pick up.

Here at Junk King Long Beach, We are also proud to say that we are able to either recycle, donate, or otherwise repurpose at least 60 percent of all the junk items that we pick up. Rather, we have a huge network of relationships with recycling centers, thrift stores, and other businesses who can put your junk to use in some way or another.

  • An ability to pick up all types of junk: There is nothing more frustrating than hiring a junk removal company, and finding out later that they are incapable of removing some of the junk items you were desperately needing to get rid of. We can also help you get rid of almost every type of junk you might have on hand, including furniture, televisions, and other appliances, yard waste, electronics and other forms of e-waste, mattresses, refrigerators, construction waste and debris, and more. • A Commitment to Fair and Upfront Pricing: Lastly, it is also important to prioritize companies that offer fair, transparent, and upfront pricing. Nobody enjoys hidden charges and fees. The Challenge of Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Junk Removal in Long Beach

junk removal long beach

For most of us, we rarely think about what happens to our trash once it gets picked up from the curbside on a weekly basis. We simply trust that the municipal trash service will dutifully deal with our waste, hopefully in a relatively safe and environmentally friendly way. When we take a look at the sheer amount of waste that we collectively create, however, it should become apparent that waste removal in the Long Beach area faces several important challenges. Consider the following:

Each and every year, residents, homeowners and business owners in Long Beach throw away approximately 368,000 tons of residential, commercial, and industrial waste. That amounts to 1,494 pounds for each man, woman, and child in our city. Where exactly does that trash end up, and what are some of the best ways to deal with our growing waste footprint?

Problems with Waste Removal in the Long Beach Area

Throughout the state of California, the vast majority of our junk is either recycled or sent to local landfills. According to CalRecycle, “in 2019, 42.2 million tons of material from California were disposed in out-of-state and in-state landfills. To calculate California’s recycling rate we add an additional 6.3 million tons of “disposal-related” materials, such as alternative daily cover, for a total of 48.6 million tons disposed. California has a population of 39.7 million residents and a per resident disposal rate of 6.7 pounds/resident/day, which is calculated using AB 341’s measurement system and a recycling rate of 37 percent.”

While a 37 percent recycling rate isn’t bad, the city of Long Beach does significantly better. The City reported a waste diversion rate of 69 percent in 2006. Though that percentage has most likely declined in recent years due to the closing of the Chinese recycling market and the virtually inexistent recycling market in the United States, Long Beach is still significantly ahead of most parts of the country in recycling.

However, unlike the vast majority of cities and municipalities who send their trash to landfills, Long Beach for the past three decades has used a less common method for dealing with the trash that they do not recycle. Dating back to 1988, Long Beach has burned much of their waste through incineration plants. The Southeast Resource Recovery Facility (SERRF) is the “waste-to-energy” plant that burns the vast majority of non-recycled trash that is produced by individuals, homeowners, and business owners across the city. According to one recent news article, the incineration facility, which is located in the Port of Long Beach, processes about 1,300 tons of trash each day. The incineration process actually produces energy power that is subsequently sold to electric companies.

Though some people consider waste incineration as a type of renewable energy, it comes with several negative consequences including an increase in air pollution and public health crises. One recent study finds that “waste incineration poses a significant threat to public health and the environment. The major impact on health is the higher incidence of cancer and respiratory symptoms; other potential effects are congenital abnormalities, hormonal defects, and increase in sex ratio.”

The waste incinerator in Long Beach is actually only one of two such plants in the state of California. Despite keeping trash out of landfills, the air pollution problems have been shown to adversely affect disadvantaged communities, and recently the City has taken up the challenge to develop a Zero Waste future initiative. The City of Long Beach says “as our City’s population grows and landfill space fills up and we recognize the effects that trash, toxic materials, and litter have on our environment and quality of life, it becomes more and more important for our City to effectively manage our own waste by reusing, recycling, and disposing in the most environmentally friendly way possible.”

The Problem of Illegal Dumping in Long Beach: What You Need to Know

illegal dumping - junk removal long beach

Across the greater Los Angeles area, illegal dumping is becoming an increasingly serious problem that is affecting the aesthetic quality of neighborhoods while also posing a potential public health problem. There is nothing worse than waking up one morning to find that your child´s favorite park has been inundated with smelly garbage bags or that the empty lot in your neighborhood was chosen as the new home for dozens of old couches, mattresses, and other useless furniture. Local city governments have been attempting to curb the problem without much success. According to one recent letter sent to the Los Angeles mayor and city council: “Businesses and individuals are dumping more and more garbage, debris and harmful substances in the city’s public-right-of-way, contributing to urban blight and public health risks and leading to a lesser quality of life in impacted neighborhoods.”

In some cases, this illegal dumping may be caused by individuals and businesses who are attempting to avoid waste removal fees. In other cases, people may simply not know how to get rid of their bulky junk items in a safe and legal way. Below, we explain why you should avoid illegal dumping, and why Junk King of Long Beach is the best option to help you deal with your waste streams.

The Risks of Illegal Dumping

Obviously, no one enjoys living in an area where piles of junk are the norm on every street corner. Besides causing an eyesore, however, illegal dumping also has several other more serious effects.

  • Drop in Property Values: In neighborhoods where illegal dumping is a constant problem, homeowners and business owners may find that their property values are negatively affected. Because our homes, businesses, and other properties are often our most sizable and important investment, illegal dumping can cause serious economic consequences to people who unfortunately have to deal with other people´s trash.
  • Public Health Risk: Illegal dumping sites are also a potential public health risk. Piles of trash can act as a breeding ground for insects like mosquitoes and flies. Also, animals that carry diseases such as rats, skunks, and opossums are also attracted to illegal dumping sites.
  • Environmental Contamination: Of course, illegal dumps also negatively affect our local environment as well. Some possible environmental impacts of illegal dumps include polluting our water sources, including groundwater, streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes. Illegal dumps can also damage our soil quality, negatively affect our air quality, and negatively impact wildlife.
  • Increase in Toxic Chemicals: Lastly, many of the items that get illegally dumped may actually be leaching toxic chemicals and substances into the local environment. Used electronics, appliances, and other sources of “e-waste” may leach heavy metals into the local environment, which can pose serious health consequences for nearby neighborhoods and communities.

What California Law Says about Illegal Dumping

For the above-mentioned reasons, illegal dumping is strongly frowned upon by local authorities. In the state of California, illegal dumping is prohibited under the Penal Code (PC) 374.3. This law states that you are guilty of illegal dumping if someone dumps waste on a public or private road, on publicly accessible private property, on other forms of private property without the owner’s consent, or in public parks.

Illegal dumping in California is considered to be an infraction-level offense, meaning that though the consequences do not include any jail time, hefty fines can be handed out. For a first-time offender, a person who illegally dumps their junk can face a fine ranging from $250 to $1,000 while a third-time offender may face a fine up to $3,000. Also, a person can face additional charges for each day the waste remained where it was dumped, thus leading to potentially serious fines. In the case of commercial illegal dumping, fines can increase to $10,000 depending on the number of offenses.

Why Should you Choose Junk King of Long Beach?

It should be obvious by now that illegal dumping should not be an option for any individual or business in the Long Beach area. Besides causing serious harm to our neighbors, the threat of finds should also be a deterrent.
