Any city that is serious about recycling will set up various recycling centers to handle the volume of trash dropped off every day from the municipal garbage collectors. Kansas City is no exception. Paper goes one way and plastic the other. Same for aluminum and glass. Once it has been properly sorted, those materials can be chopped up and melted down then made into raw materials for reuse.
All of this is helping keep the garbage away from the Kansas City landfills; that’s the goal. Although residents are given guidelines as what should be considered recyclable material and what’s not, something always slips by and that’s when the sorters get to work. Believe it or not, these workers are looking for “clean trash.” When you consider that in March Kansas City residents tossed out 1,651 tons of recycled materials you can begin to appreciate how much sorting needs to be done.
