What does 87 tons of trash look like? As one of the volunteers who showed up for the 27th Annual Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach Spring Cleanup. In a single Saturday morning, over 6,000 volunteers fanned along the Texas shorelines to pick up all that trash. It’s scary to think they collected 87 tons but even scarier to realize how careless some people are when it comes to throwing away garbage.
“Trash on Texas beaches kills fish, birds and tourism potential,” Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson said after pitching in to help cleanup Surfside Beach. “The nearly 6,000 volunteers who showed up and got to work today to do something about it make me proud to be a Texan.”
Along with the usual trash suspects of cigarette butts, beer cans and other litter the trash pickers also found diving gear, a plastic turkey, a plastic donkey, a plastic alligator, underwear, a bottle of sulfuric acid, hair extensions, a burned mattress, a syringe, a bag of marijuana and a cooler full of hot beer and sodas. Just like there are adopt-a-highway projects you can also adopt-a-beach or at least a section of the beach.
Now that those beaches are cleaned up, you might be considering a weekend excursion to the shore. Of course you’d still have to handle your own home cleanup projects. This is where Junk King Houston can be a big help. How much help? Check in with their Facebook page and you’ll find plenty of Junk King fans who are happy to share positive responses like these:
“Guys were very professional friendly and careful in moving furniture out of my home. Well done.”
“Friendly service, on-time, efficient loading to maximize space and job done quickly. Would absolutely recommend to anyone with no reservation.”
“Clark and Jeff arrived on time. Both men were nice, friendly and fast. Good customer service! Thank you Junk King!”
“Couldn’t be more pleased. Arrived on time and provided excellent service. Would definitely use them again.”
Apparently arriving on time is a recurring theme here. That’s because Junk King recognizes how valuable your own time is especially if it is one the weekend. You work hard all week and need time to relax. That’s why you shouldn’t be loading up your own truck and then driving for hours to the nearest landfill. Junk King happily takes on those tasks. They’ll be in and out of your home before you can blink. At that point all you have to do is head to the beach! Call Junk King today to find out how they can get rid of your trash.
There are a lot of great folks living in Houston who will do whatever they can to help out a neighbor even if that neighbor is a total strange. When a 93-year-old WWII vet recently had his home vandalized some local Marines got together to form a special “Band of Brothers” to help out the Purple Heart recipient. Within three days the marines had raised over $5,000 to donate to the WWII vet. They also pitched in with the clean-up effort. This is a shining example of how a little charity can go a long way to improve someone’s life.
There are some new arrivals at the Houston Zoo that has everyone buzzing. A baby Masai Giraffe was born on July 14th. Consider these facts: This was a 14 month long pregnancy, normal for giraffes. Right out of the gate this baby weighed 160 pounds and was already 74 inches tall. That’s some baby! This little long necked cutie wasn’t the only new arrival to show up at the zoo. There have also been new monkeys, turtles, toads, geckos and a lemur who made their first steps in the world. It’s certainly an exciting time to be around the zoo these days. With all of these new arrivals there has to be room made to accommodate the growing families.
