Keeping E-waste out of landfills

Junk King Fairfax is 100% landfill free, which means we recycle 100% of the e-waste we haul.

According to DoSomething.org, an incredible 80 to 85 percent of tech junk, or e-waste, ends up in landfills or incinerators, and can release toxic gases into the air.  Again,  Junk King keeps 100% of the e-waste we collect out of the landfills.

1. 80 to 85 percent of electronic products were discarded in landfills or incinerators, which can release certain toxics into the air.
2. E-waste represents 2 percent of America’s trash in landfills, but it equals 70 percent of overall toxic waste. The extreme amount of lead in electronics alone causes damage in the central and peripheral nervous systems, the blood and the kidneys.
3. 20 to 50 million metric tons of e-waste are disposed worldwide every year.
4. Cell phones and other electronic items contain high amounts of precious metals like gold or silver. Americans dump phones containing over $60 million in gold/silver every year.
5. Only 12.5 percent of e-waste is currently recycled.
6. For every 1 million cell phones that are recycled, 35,274 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium can be recovered.
7. Recycling 1 million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by 3,657 U.S. homes in a year.
8. E-waste is still the fastest growing municipal waste stream in America, according to the EPA.
9. A large number of what is labeled as “e-waste” is actually not waste at all, but rather whole electronic equipment or parts that are readily marketable for reuse or can be recycled for materials recovery.
10. It takes 539 pounds of fossil fuel, 48 pounds of chemicals, and 1.5 tons of water to manufacture one computer and monitor
11. Electronic items that are considered to be hazardous include, but are not limited to:
• Televisions and computer monitors that contain cathode ray tubes
• LCD desktop monitors
• Laptop computers with LCD displays
• LCD televisions
• Plasma televisions
• Portable DVD players with LCD screens.

Imagine how much better we’d all be if all haulers met Junk King’s standard of 100% landfree.

Bank of America shares how clearing clutter can help your finances

A Bank of America article offers practical tips how de-cluttering your home can make it more inviting, reduce your stress and help you avoid health problems aggravated by mold or dirt. Also, de-cluttering your home can save you money!
1.  Catch problems early. Do you remember the last time you saw the back of your closet? If not, your stuff may be blocking you from signs of damage. You may avoid major repair or extermination bills down the road.
2. Make better use of freed-up space. Do you have a spare room or basement that’s full of junk? If you clear it out, you’ll have more space for your family, and possibly avoid renting a storage locker. You may even be able to turn that extra space into income by taking on a tenant.
3.  Entertain at home. Do you ever go out for dinner or coffee with friends to avoid inviting them into your untidy home? If so, your clutter is ramping up your entertainment expenses. By making your home more guest-friendly, you’ll be a more comfortable host while saving money on restaurant bills.
4. Identify your big clutter problems. You may notice that just one or two types of items cause much of your clutter. Is it books and magazines? Clothes? Gadgets? Once you’ve fingered your clutter culprit, put it on a “do not buy” list. This way you’ll avoid cluttering your home again, and save money on future purchases.
Junk King can help you take advantage of this excellent advice from Bank of America. We can help yo clear the clutter. Then you can enjoy your clean home and improved finances.

Recycling Metal from Junk

Americans throw away enough aluminum in three months to rebuild all of our commercial airplanes. The energy saved by recycling one aluminum can could run a television for three hours. The energy saved by recycling a year supply of steel cans can power a city the size of Washington DC for 10 years. You can recycle the small stuff—cans and such—through the county services. Northern Virginia and Montgomery Md have good programs for recycling.

For the big items, you may need a junk removal company. Junk King is, by far, the greenest.
In 2012, Junk King Fairfax recycled, repurposed, and donated everything we hauled—more than 950 tons. We met our goal of being 100% landfill free.

We recycled more than 150 tons of metal. We take metal items that other hauler will not take, such as propane tanks. We are one of the few haulers that has a warehouse where we can adequately sort the debris.

Junk King Super Service Award

Junk King’s General Manager, Alex Powers, commented on his customer care: “We are building a junk removal service on relationships. We bonus our crews based on their customer reviews—not by their sales volume. We provide free advice, free estimates, fair prices, and almost flawless performance. And on those rare occasions when we do make a mistake, we always make it right with the customer.”

Junk King will soon expand service. At present, we server all of Northern Virginia: Fairfax, Alexandria, Arlington, and Prince William. In the New Year, we plan to serve Montgomery County, Maryland as well.

Junk and Debris Removal – Help for Asthma Sufferers

You may be one of the 57 million Americans who suffer from severe allergies and asthma. Then beware the microscopic dust mite.

40,000 per dust particle!House dust mites are the most common trigger of asthma. In addition, they can cause mild skin and allergic reactions,  including eczema.
Dust mites live in house dust. The feces of the dust mite is the actual allergen that causes breathing problems. You get about 40,000 dust mites per speck of dust, and each of the buggers produce feces 20 times per day. That’s a lot of dust mite poo that you’re inhaling.
Here are three tips that can help you battle dust mites:

1. Get rid of the junk and debris. All that extra stuff attracts dust, traps moisture, and become a breeding ground for dust mites. Junk King can help you with this important first step.

2. Vacuum rugs and carpets regularly.  Occasionally, steam clean carpets and other furniture with heavy fabrics such as couches.

3. Keep the air dry with air-conditioning or a dehumidifier. Dust mites like humidity.

4. Use a HEPA filter to 3 microns. Or you may prefer a negative ion and ozone generator. If your house doesn’t have an air filter, then your lungs are the air filter.

Disposing Latex Paint

Latex paint is not a hazardous material; it is a ceramic. Oil based paint is indeed hazardous waste.

If you need to get rid old latex paint, follow these simple steps:
1. Remove the lid and place can in a safe, well-ventilated area.
2. Allow a few days to let the latex dry to ceramic form.
3. Put lids and cans of dried latex into a plastic trash bag along with your regular household trash.

For a faster drying—as fast as 30 minutes–you can use waste paint hardener is available at paint stores and most area hardware stores. Mulch, kitty litter, or shredded paper may also be used as a drying agent.

Some counties limit the number of cans you may dispose for each pick-up. Most counties request that you put the trash bags in rigid trashcans. Contact your county or trash hauler for more details.

Usually, the paint can you put into your trash gets recycled. The can is incinerated where the dried paint burns off of the metal can. The facility recovers the remaining steel from the ash and collects the steel for recycling.

Also, county residents can take paint to their county disposal sites:

Alexandria: 3224 Colvin Street, Alexandria, VA

Arlington: 3155 South Fern Street Arlington, VA‎  22202

Fairfax: 4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax, VA 22030

If you have oil-based paints or lots of latex paint, call us at Junk King and we’ll put you in touch with our partner Yuk Old Paint, who will help you properly dispose of the paint.

Those old refrigerators are expensive!

That old refrigerator in the basement isn’t free. These old machines were built to last, but they also use used a lot more energy–5 times more than today’s equivalent refrigerators! For example, an old 19.0 cubic feet (average size), side-by-side refrigerator uses $243.20 of energy each year. (The equivalent new Energy Star machines use only $58 per year to run.)

Run your own calculation to see how much you can save.

Then call Junk King today to get rid of your old energy hog and start saving.

Being Green Can Be Economical

When people see the word ‘green’ advertised for a service, they often think it is going to cost them more than a service that is not eco-friendly.

They know that some businesses charge a premium for ‘green.’ From organic food markets to eco-friendly products, brand prices are often marked up because they are ‘green.’

Junk King is different. We provide the greenest junk removal service at prices 30% below our major competitors. We are 100% landfill free because we have a warehouse where we sort materials for proper disposal and we have a network of end-users of everything we haul. Even the trash we collect goes to an incinerator that uses the biomass to generate electricity to power 75,000 homes in Fairfax.

The great majority of junk haulers do not have a place to sort debris so they pay the $50 to $80 per ton at the dumps. By using our warehouse and labor to sort, donate, repurpose, and recycle, we save more on the dumping fees than we pay the labor to sort.

By working smarter, we can give our customers in Northern Virginia the best of both worlds – affordable and green services.

Storm Debris Removal–Washington Mero Area

First, if your tree is still hanging over your house or powerlines, call a preofessional tree removal company. You most likely need the crane or the men “roping” down limbs. These guys are specialists, and we know some great tree services that we are happy to refer.

However, sometimes Mother Nature drops the tree or big limbs. The damage is done. The tree debris is lying on the ground and is not a threat to persons or property. Now the main concern is disposing the debris – not felling the tree. You don’t need the arborist that costs $125 hour or the aerial speicalists that cost $60 an hour. You just want some strong guys with big trucks, chain saws, and rakes who can clean up the mess at the least cost to you. And you’d like the job done quickly.

Junk King is usually the best value for debris hauling. Our trucks are bigger than the stakebody trucks the tree services use. Our crews cost less than the arborists and aerialists that come with tree services. You can expect to save about 20% from the cost of the tree service hauling debris. They are tree experts; we are debris experts.
Another advantage to Junk King is that we haul you debris right away. After a big storm, the proefessional tree services are over-booked taking trees off rooftops and powerlines. They have long-term commitments to property managers, utility companies, and insurance companies. You do not need to wait in line to get your mess cleared from your property. Junk King can haul your debris while the tree experts take care of the more diffecult and expensive jobs.

Storm Debris Removal
By the way, after every storm, you get a lot of small operators cruising the area for some pick-up work. They might not be insured. Plus their tiny pick-up tucks make debris hauling uneconimical. I guarentee you that Junk King (or any full-service tree company) will charge less and provide better and safer service.
