Time for a blast from the past. “Very likely people in Boulder have got so accustomed to thinking of the creek and its banks as a place to throw tin cans and rubbish that it may require too great a feat of imagination to conceive of it as a pretty, shaded spot with a clean well kept park path running beside the murmuring waters.”
That quote comes from Fredrick Law Olmsted, Jr. and he was a proud member of the Boulder City Improvement Association who wrote those words in a report published in 1910. That would mean that Boulder Creek has always had a problem with folks leaving trash behind. Fortunately, there have been events like the annual Community Cleanup Day that brings volunteers from all over the area who are dedicated to making the parks sparkle.
The event held this year was the 11th in a row that found workers of all ages pulling weeds, cleaning up trash and collecting recyclables from all along Boulder Creek. Keeping the Boulder Creek clean is a terrific way to spend a few hours on a Saturday morning. It really gives you a sense of accomplishment. Of course, so would cleaning up your own homestead. Sure you can dust and mop around the house but it that taking care of the big problem? That would be all the junk you’re holding onto. That stuff is taking up space, collecting dust, creating mold and just being an eyesore. You can finally toss it out the right way by hiring Junk King of Denver.

Looking to swap out your old TV or computer monitor for a high tech new flat screen display? Awesome. One hitch in the plan: You can’t throw out the old set with the garbage. Sure, the garbage pickup crews were able to haul it off before but starting this July that will be against the law and it won’t just be televisions that you can’t throw away. Any item that would be deemed electronic waste would officially be classified as “non perishable.”
Denver’s Big Blue Bear got slimed. This is the 40-foot-tall piece of sculpture that sits outside of the Colorado Convention Center. Apparently, some numbskull decided that Blue Bear should be green and dumped paint all over it. Not funny. Now it’s going to take around $11,000 to clean up the artwork and make sure it’s not further damaged in the process. Denver’s Silo Workshop is in charge of the cleanup which will include a low-pressure power wash and repainting of any part of the bear’s original coat.
Just north of Denver in Fort Morgan City, the city council has proposed the idea to provide free mulch to local residents. This mulch would be coming from all the tree trimming that the city does on a regular basis. Usually this falls to workers from the power company who have to safeguard against trees limbs crashing down on power lines. Some folks hate it when the wood chippers are fired up in their neighborhood because it means trees might be coming down. But wouldn’t it be worse if the power went out? Those wood chippers create a perfect mulch that can help a garden grow. Instead of piling it on city property, it makes sense to give it away to anyone who wants the stuff.
How much practical use are you getting out of your backyard? A yard is an important part of your property especially in the warmer months. That’s when you can relax outdoors, invite friends over for a cook-out or have some place for the kids to safely play. Over the years, your backyard could have worn down from abuse from the weather. Why not give your backyard a makeover? Not only will this make entertaining more pleasurable but it will also increase the value of your home.
It’s an ironic fact that most people feel they need to get in shape in order to join a gym. There is this sense that all the “good looking people” are the ones who are working out. The truth is that everyone with the right motivation goes to the gym. Tall, short, thin, fat, ripped or flabby: they’re all represented. Of course, feeling like you won’t fit into the gym is probably the reason why you bought yourself some home exercise equipment like a treadmill or stationary bike. Now the real estate market has gone high tech and Denver realtors are staying ahead of the curve. Most prospective buyers will begin their search for a new home online. That means making sure those resources are kept up to date. A savvy realtor will also be plugged into the active social media network to keep his clients apprised of new listings.
A great way to start the New Year is to get organized. To some folks that’s a huge undertaking. However, you can break it down to a simple mantra of “A place for everything and everything in its place.” Designate where you want the shoes to go when the family comes home whether that’s a rug by the door or in their rooms. Same for coats, scarves, hats and gloves. Don’t just toss them around. Next find a place for magazines, mail and keys. If you’ve got kids with toys then you know how they can end up scattered everywhere. Give the kids a special place for their toys and have them put them away every night before bed. You’ll be starting some new habits but you’re home will look a lot less cluttered.
The idea of pampering yourself seems very indulgent to many people. The truth is that unless you provide yourself with the opportunity to “recharge your batteries” you’re not going to be any good to anybody. How can you keep up being Wonder Mom or Super Dad if you’re exhausted and quick to snap? That’s why it is so important to schedule a little pampering time for yourself. “Time” is the key issue here. Most of us don’t think we have enough hours in the day to get everything done. But what would it look like if you could schedule at least 60 minutes, once a week just for you? That’s not really a lot of time. What could you do in an hour that would be considered pampering?
