Washing clothes is often thought of as a boring chore. You don’t do it until you really, really have to. It can also be an expensive proposition running your own washer and dryer. There are ways to cut back. In terms of laundry detergent you can save a bundle if you don’t use any at all.
Yes, for clothes that are just slightly dirty no laundry detergent might have the same impact as a cup of your favorite brand. If you’re looking for that fresh clean smell that might be coming more from your dryer clothe then the soap. You could also head over to YouTube to find a How To video on making your own detergent. It’s not that complicated and can save you some serious bucks.
If you’re not ready to give up on the laundry detergent just yet, at least try cutting back. The makers love it when you fill up the cup they provide but do you really need that much? Go for half a cup and see if you get the same result. Doesn’t that work when you’ve found yourself running out of detergent? Additionally, try buying your detergent in bulk. You’ll always save more.
You can also cut back on the laundry overall. You don’t need to wash the same article of clothing or towel after every single use. On the other hand, sending a lot of clothes to the dry cleaner is a big dent for your wallet. Stick with the machine washables. Saving money on your energy bills means cutting back on the hot temperature. Wash everything in cold or stick to warm and cold. Keep away from the hot and you can cut your energy use by up to 50%.
Speaking of energy savings is your current machine Energy Star rated. If you’ve had it for over 15 years it probably isn’t. An EnergyStar machine means it has been redesign to operate at peak efficiency. You could even be eligible for a rebate when you turn in your old machine for a new, improved model.

Even though we’re still a few weeks away from Earth Day, volunteers are getting a head start in the Dallas/Fort Worth area by participating in the 28th annual Cowtown Great American Clean-Up. So far, over 5,200 folks have registered to be part of the neighborhood cleanup. As with the previous clean ups, supplies and gear were distributed the Friday before the big day. Then it was all about scouring through the public areas picking up whatever doesn’t belong. That includes bottles, fast food wrappers, cigarette butts and soda cans. The volunteers will also find the occasional abandoned shopping carts, tires and sofa. All of those oversized items will also be collected by specially designated trucks. If the previous years are any indication, there will probably be close to a ton or so of garbage collected and disposed of. Not bad for a single day’s work.
You just never know who or what might be lurking around a dumpster. The Dallas Police Department was reminded of this the other day when they found a man lurking by a dumpster outside of FedEx office at two in the morning. The officers spotted some nefarious types in what looked like a drug deal going down. As they were investigating this deal, one of the officers spotted a man coming from the inside of a dumpster. It looked like this vagrant had a gun. The officers turn on him and ordered him to drop his weapon. He didn’t and the police opened fired. They missed and the young man dropped his BB gun and arrested the felon. All of that action went down around a dumpster. This doesn’t mean that the dumpster you might be thinking about renting is going to become a crime scene. However, you can’t avoid the simple fact that dumpsters have a way of attracting all kinds of unwanted elements.
Kids love playing in dirt. That’s a simple fact of life. Much like a pile of raked leaves being irresistible, a mound of dirt is hard to keep kids out of; especially boys. Whether it’s setting up wrestling action figures or rolling toy trucks through the dirt, there really isn’t a better way to spend a few hours. Of course, mom might not be so enthusiastic when the little ones come inside covered with dirt from head to toe. Add a little water and you’ve got a muddy mess for sure.
As a concept, downsizing is a way for retirees to improve the quality of their lives by moving into more manageable living spaces. However, it’s not just those who have hit their golden years who are thinking about downsizing. Today, many of Dallas’ baby boomer generation are considering downsizing as a viable option to prepare for their ultimate retirement. For example, one Dallas resident is trading in her four-bedroom 3,600-square-foot home for a decent 2,200-square-foot home in a subdivision complete with a pool and gardening that is maintained by the complex.

When it comes to a moving destination the Dallas-Fort Worth area ranks fourth on this year’s Penske Truck Rental list. Who better to determine which town is the most popular for moving to then a truck rental company? Top of the list is Atlanta but the strong showing from Dallas means it’s an extremely popular site for new residents. It’s also a popular place for the current locals to move around in. There are so many happening neighborhoods that it just makes sense to pick up and move across town. A move like that can reinvigorate your life and relationship. The goal is to make a smart move and that means starting with a junk move.

What is equally smart are the Digital Video Recorders or DVRs that have become standard on most upgraded cable delivery systems. It doesn’t matter if you have a satellite, cable or a TiVo type of DVR the big question becomes whether or not you’re getting the most out of your DVR.
