When You Need Couch Removal In The Contra Costa Area

There are few simple pleasures in life that can compare to cozying up on a comfy couch in front of the TV and simply relaxing. Or even sleeping, as many of us are prone to do. However, when that comfy couch becomes worn-out and lumpy, it’s time for an upgrade and couch removal.

“Sure,” you might say. “But that’s easier said than done.”

This is true since just moving a couch or sofa is almost never a one-person job. And the larger the couch, the more it weighs, and the harder it is to get it through doorways and stairwells. Oh, and if you happen to have an old sleeper sofa, well then, you’ve got a monster piece to move.

So, what do you do about couch removal then?

Sofa or Couch? And How Do You Remove It?

Perhaps you’ve never thought about it, but there is a difference between a sofa and a couch. At least, as far as definitions go. Sleeping on one or the other likely feels the same!

According to an Apartment Therapy article,

While Overstock calls a sofa an upholstered bench with cushions, two arms, and ample space for people to sit, a couch typically has no arms and is smaller than a sofa.

However, it turns out that the distinction has blurred over the decades and, today, there is no real difference other than which term people choose to use.

The same article goes on to note,

“Today, the choice of ‘sofa’ versus ‘couch is entirely subjective and a reflection of how you live with the piece,” explains Nidhi Kapur, founder and CEO of Maiden Home. “‘Couch’ is the more casual term used for a comfort-driven piece, while ‘sofa’ is the more formal and might refer to a polished, design-driven piece.”

Regardless of what you want to call it, when your old couch – or sofa – becomes uncomfortable or too worn and ragged to keep around, you have to remove it. And that can be a real challenge, especially if you have no one to help and only own a Prius!

So, the big question is: How do I get rid of my old couch?

Before we go there, another question that naturally follows this one is, where do you take it?

Goodbye, Old Couch, Hello, Landfill. Really?

If you stop and think about it, if your old couch is truly unusable then the only destination for it must be the dump. That’s what landfills are for, right?

Yes, but…

If you live in the Contra Costa County region, you may be surprised to learn that there are few waste facilities available and just five landfills listed for the County. In addition, once you find a location you think you want to use, you have to call first to confirm that it will take couches and sofas. Not all of them do, as it turns out.

If you have access to a large dumpster at your residence, you may consider disposing of your couch there. But you’ll need some tools and some time, since the best way to do this by disassembling your couch or sofa. And, if this sounds like it will be a lot of work, you’re right!

But it is a free way to dispose of your couch.

Maybe that’s not an option for you. But you should also know that much of the material your old couch or sofa is made from can be recycled. If you choose to try recycling it yourself, however, you still have to dismantle it first. And keep in mind that not everything your couch is made of can be recycled, like all the foam padding materials and plastics.

On the other hand, there may be plenty of metal parts that can be sold for scrap metal, and the wood pieces can be reused or recycled.

Thinking About a New Home for Your Old Furniture

Most of us have experienced this: You’re driving along somewhere outside of, say, Concord or Richmond, and you see an old couch dumped out in a field or along the side of the road. This is a classic example of what you should never consider as an easy “couch removal” option.

When you see illegal dumping in Contra Costa County, you have several options for reporting the incident.

For example, if you witness some illegal dumping as it is happening, you’re encouraged to call 911 to get the police out to the site, if possible. Hopefully, you’ll be able to write down the car or truck license plate numbers of the dumpers. Better yet, take pictures with your phone if you can.

Also, if you spot debris in any of the creeks around Contra Costa County, you should call the Contra Costa Clean Water Program hotline at 1-800-NO-DUMPING. And, if you do spot something like a sofa that has been left on the curb, then you’ll want to contact the municipal city agency where the offense occurred.

Of course, illegal dumping here would be eliminated if folks just were responsible enough to call Junk King Contra Costa!

Hey! Feel Like Moving a Couch?

If you want to get rid of your couch yourself, you have to get some help, since it’s too heavy for one person to lift. And, even if you could, it’s too large and bulky to navigate alone through doorways and steps alone.

So, how much do these things weigh?

Couches come in different sizes and styles, from small two-seaters to massive sectionals. The weight depends but ranges from three-seat sofas at over 250 pounds to four-pieces sectionals weighing over 1,000 pounds.

If you do have help, then moving your old couch might be possible – if you have a vehicle large enough to carry it safely.

These are just some of the reasons why you simply need to call Junk King Contra Costa for your couch removal needs.

That single call to Junk King can set a plan in motion that will have all of your unwanted items removed from your property without you lifting a finger. Consider the couch removal provided by Junk King. If it took two capable movers to bring that sofa into your home, then it will take the same number of movers to take it out.

These aren’t just any movers, however. The Junk King crews are all licensed and insured. They’re going to be treating your property as if it were their own. That means no dragging furniture across the floor or banging into walls.

In addition to handling your old couch removal, that same Junk King crew can remove other bulky items like appliances, mattresses, computers, televisions, monitors, chairs, tables and printers. Additionally, that friendly Junk King crew can work wonders around your yard as they help get you ready for the coming winter season.

The crews can take away fallen palm fronds, bags of leaves and any other type of yard waste. If you’ve been storing things like lumber, wood and construction debris on your property, now is the time to have it all taken away.

In fact, everything can be gone in a single junk removal appointment with Junk King Contra Costa.

All of which is why, if you live anywhere in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, we heartily recommend calling in a professional furniture removal team like Junk King Contra Costa to take care of it all for you.

Thinking About Old Furniture Removal In Alameda And Contra Costa Counties

contra costa furniture removal

If you live in the East Bay and need to get rid of old furniture, you may find that furniture removal is no easy task.

When you consider that just about any type of furniture is never going to fit into a Prius, or pretty much any other car, that’s just the first hurdle. Unless you have some help, many pieces of old furniture are too heavy for one person to manage.

And then you have to take it somewhere to dispose of it!

The Challenge of Furniture Removal

According to the Contra Costa County official website, only a handful of waste facilities for waste management transfer are listed. And, of these, only five are landfills.

Depending on where you live (or work) you have a choice of going to Berkeley, Livermore, Martinez, Pittsburg, Pleasanton, Richmond, or San Leandro. None of these list furniture specifically as an accepted item although they do accept wood scraps and wood debris.

One of the great things about old furniture is that most of the materials are almost certainly recyclable. However, the reality is that some furniture is far too difficult to dismantle to make it cost-effective for recycling purposes. And some materials such as various plastics and fibers are not recyclable.

There are a few other things you should consider, however, when recycling your old furniture.

While it can be a great option, you can’t always just put it all into a truck and take it to your local recycling facility. Many recycling service centers have limits on what they will take. In addition, because many furniture items are composed of a variety of materials, these often need to be dismantled first.

Some materials are easily recycled, while others such as certain foam padding materials, require special handling. For example, all steel or aluminum parts can be used for scrap metal, while most wood furniture can be accepted for recycling purposes.

However, like most items that are likely constructed of mixed materials, it’s always best to call first before hauling your old furniture to an East Bay waste transfer station facility or landfill

Thinking About a New Home for Your Old Furniture

Have you ever found yourself driving along some backroad between, say, Danville and Antioch, and you notice an old sofa sitting on the side of the road? Or maybe it’s a well-worn recliner chair resting on the shoulder of the road just outside of Castro Valley?

While the previous owners may have had somewhat good intentions, dumping your old, unwanted furniture anywhere is not a good practice. Not to mention that it’s illegal in just about every county

You can ask around with your friends and family, of course, to see if anyone can use your old items. And, depending on where you live in the Contra Costa and Alameda County region, you may have plenty of neighbors who might want them, or that knows someone who could use them.

Better yet, if your old furniture is still in good condition but you no longer want or need it, you could consider donating it. This accomplishes a few things that makes the whole furniture disposal task easy for you.

Donating to a non-profit or charitable organization, for example, is a great way to get rid of furniture you no longer want or need when you’re moving. And, best of all, if you donate to one of the charities that come and pick up your items, you don’t even have to load them yourself.

And, best of all, you’re helping others while helping yourself!

However, if your old furniture is just too far gone to pass on to someone else or even try to sell online or in a garage sale, it needs to be disposed of. Which means, unfortunately, you need a way of hauling it.

Moving Furniture Isn’t for Everyone

One more challenge that faces anyone who needs to dispose of old furniture is transportation. And that’s after you figure out how you’re going to get that old table or dresser out of your house or apartment, and out to the driveway or curb.

And hopefully you don’t have to navigate stairs, too!

But let’s assume for a moment that you have plenty of help and moving your old furniture isn’t an issue. How do you get it to wherever you’ve decided to dispose of it?

More often than not, you’re going to need a truck or, at the very least, a large van or SUV with enough cargo space to accommodate your items. So, let’s say you’ve managed to get it out of the house or apartment, into a truck, and now, off to the closest transfer station.

What’s it going to cost you when you get there?

Fees will vary based on location and the size and number of furniture items, but one local example from January 2020 lists a fee of $46.04 for each sofa, loveseat, or recliner.

And that’s not including any additional fees and your cost of gas to get there and back home.

All of which is why, if you live anywhere in Alameda or Contra Costa Counties, we heartily recommend calling in a professional furniture removal team like Junk King Contra Costa to take care of it all for you.
