Furniture Donations Pickup in Columbus

It’s the end of the school year at Ohio State University and that means it’s time for Dump & Run. This is the tenth year when students who are heading home for the summer drop off all the stuff they don’t want to take with them. All these items are sorted and put into storage. Then the new students who show up in the fall have a chance to furnish their dorm rooms at a deep discount. The money the students raise for the re-sale will go to a local area food bank. That’s a classic win/win for everybody.

The university organization Students for Recycling promotes and runs it at Ohio State. “We estimate we probably divert 2 to 4 tons of material from landfills, whether it’s furniture, clothing or other stuff,” said Tricia Evans, president of the group. “It’s kind of cool.”

The common items that end up in the Dump & Run bins are futons, end tables, area rugs and lamps, irons, slow cookers and old-fashioned box TVs. Most of the high-end flat screens are taken back home. Students can also donate any unopened leftover food stuff.

“Six university-owned Greek houses received Dump & Run bins this year for the first time. Students for Recycling also are scheduled to sweep through the off-campus neighborhoods in a rented truck on July 20 to pick up donated couches and other larger furnishings, Swanger said. “Ohio State is known as a green campus. Recycling is easy here.”

That’s good news for the campus and for the rest of Ohio. Anytime you can keep something from being dumped into a landfill we all benefit. It’s that eco-friendly philosophy that has been embraced by Junk King Columbus. These are the junk removal specialists who happily haul away anything you want to get out of your home. If you’re eager to toss out big pieces of furniture like sofas, love seats or tables, Junk King will always try to reuse and recycle items when possible. They’ll also try and make sure pieces end up with local charities that refurbish and the re-sell the items just like those college kids. Don’t be embarrassed if your sofa is stained or there is a leg missing from a dresser. The charities can clean and fix whatever is donated. This is also a wonderful way to provide jobs and skills training for those in need.

You also don’t have to worry about carrying your furniture out to the curb like with many other types of companies. The Junk King Columbus crew will go into any room, down any basement stair or up any attic ladder to remove those items. You’ll be clearing your house of clutter and hopefully helping someone else along the way. It’s another win/win all around!

Columbus Old Washing Machine and Dryer Disposal

Learning how to do laundry is one of those important life lessons that most moms are happy to share with their children, especially when it means that they can add that to their list of chores.  Here’s something a child might not like to hear: just because their mom had a certain way of doing things doesn’t mean there isn’t a better, more efficient way or doing the laundry.

The most important laundry lesson is to embrace sorting. Usually this meant taking the heaping pile of clothes from the hamper and spending time picking through them before loading up the machine. Now you can find a hamper with separate buckets: One for whites and the other for colors. You can even get a hamper with three buckets to use for keeping your dry cleaning in a different pile. This sorting will make laundry day a lot less of a hassle.

If you’re doing all of your laundry one cycle after another then you want to do the whites last especially if you’re using bleach. It should all be gone in one cycle but it’s best to play it safe. When using bleach, even on whites, try to pour it into the water and not onto the clothes and always use hot water. Colors should be washed in cold water. It’s better to get your water running, pour in the detergent, let it mix up and then add the clothes. That way your soap gets to dissolve and do its thing.

To avoid the never-ending battle of the loss sock you can buy sock clips. Yes, that’s a thing. Clip the socks together and wash/dry them that way. A small mesh bag is good for underwear and other delicates that don’t need to mix it up with the bigger articles of clothing.

Above everything else, the most efficient way to do a good laundry cycle is to make sure your washing machine and dryer are working properly.  You cannot underestimate the value of having a high-tech washer / dryer – especially if the one you have has already had years of use.  Your old machine is bound to accumulate quite a bit of wear and tear, which makes its effectiveness for cleaning your laundry that much less efficient.  Newer models have a variety of features and functions that will make your life easier and your clothes cleaner!

If it is about time to swap out the old machine for a new model then you’ll want to give Junk King of Columbus a call.  Getting rid of your own washing machine or dryer can be quite a task – not to mention figuring the right place to responsibly dispose of large appliances like these.  Junk King is the Columbus, Ohio based pro when it comes to removing over-sized items from your home. All you need to do is set up a removal appointment and Junk King will handle the rest. They’ll set you up with an experienced, insured and professional hauling crew and truck to take care of the job. Chances are you didn’t bring your washer and dryer into your home and you shouldn’t worry about taking them out. Let Junk King Columbus do the heavy lifting!

Spring Cleaning Tips In Columbus Ohio

The official first day of spring has come and gone. It was March 30th. Did you get your spring-cleaning done yet? If you’ve been putting off the job, you’re not alone. What’s interesting is that many of the folks who hate cleaning (that means everyone!) miss out on the simple tips which make that chore easier to manage. In other words, if it doesn’t become such a hassle you’ll keep your home sparkling.

To organize your major spring-cleaning effort, you’ll want to get all the cleaning supplies you’ll need. Yes, make a list! The last thing you want to do is run back and forth to the store to get stuff in the middle of the cleaning. A good item to add to that list is a bucket or tray they lets you carry your supplies from room to room. You see all the professional maids use these handy item. Having your cleaning supplies with you as you go will make the job go faster!

First off, strip the beds and get those sheets and blankets in the washer. While those cycles are running, hit the dusting circuit. You want to take everything off of shelves and give it a good wipe down. There are dusters with extension polls that are perfect for clearing out cobwebs, ceiling fans or dusting baseboards. When the dusting is done, it’s time for vacuuming, sweeping and moping. Here is when you want to make sure the pets are at day care and the kids are at the movies. This way you have the room to move around and get the work done without moving obstacles.

As you make your way through your home you’re probably going to discover a lot of stuff that can be tossed out. It won’t take long to overflow your garbage cans. What happens if you still have stuff to get rid of?   Also, how about those large junk items that you can’t simply toss in the garbage can, like appliances, furniture items, e-waste, yard debris and more.  You don’t want to improperly dispose of hazardous electronics, and you also don’t want to hurt yourself trying to haul huge items to the curb.   That would bring your entire spring cleaning operation to a screeching halt.

It’s times like this when you should call in Junk King Columbus. These are the Columbus, Ohio based junk removal specialists who have taken junk removal to a whole new level. The Junk King crew will be doing all the heavy lifting and loading for you while you can keep on handling your spring cleaning operation.

This means if you want to get rid of a sofa or fridge they can handle the job. They’ll be putting all that oversize junk on the back of their truck. As soon as your stuff is all loaded up, the Junk King crew will head out to the nearest recycling center to make sure it’s all properly disposed of.

You can’t really call your home totally clean for the spring if it still has junk sitting all over the place. Let Junk King Columbus take care of that for you!

Columbus Bulk Item Pickup

Sometimes things around the house can get a little bulky. We’re not talking about our waistlines after Thanksgiving dinner but about the stuff we collect over the years that can’t be thrown out in the weekly trash pickup. Have you ever tried to toss out a sofa? It’s not easy. Here in Columbus the Department of Sanitation can help with a bulky pickup but that’s not going to be easy either.

The first step for scheduling a bulk-collection pickup with the city will require you to call their City Service Center. This will take you through a maze of telephone prompts that may or may not land you with an actual human. You could try scheduling an appointment through the city’s website but there is no guarantee anyone is going to be answering that email anytime soon especially with all the budget cuts.

There are also very specific rules when it comes to leaving stuff by your curb. Here are just a few: “If your regular trash is picked up at the curb, place bulk items in front of your home away from obstructions on your specially scheduled collection day. If your regular trash is picked up in an alley, place bulk items on the edge of your property at the alley line on your specially scheduled collection day. Roll carpet into a bundle 4 feet long by 2 feet in diameter and tie it with rope. Leave furniture assembled. Glass must be removed from bulk items, placed in a box, taped and marked glass. Residents are responsible for cleaning up any glass residue that may remain on the ground in front of their home as a result of collection. Smaller bulk items must be placed in boxes. Plastic or metal trash cans placed out with a bulk collection will be collected for disposal.” All of this makes it feel like you’ll be packing up your junk like you were moving.

Then there is the issue of getting it out to the curb in the first place. In many cases, that simply isn’t feasible. The city will pick up things like furniture or mattresses. However, if you are hoping to toss out stuff like auto parts, tires, construction waste, refrigerators, hot tubs, pool tables, pianos, spars, water coolers or air conditioners you can forget it! The city won’t be picking those things up. So, who can you turn to for a complete junk removal? That would be Junk King of Columbus.

When you hire Junk King Columbus you’ll be hiring a professional crew to do the work. You won’t have to roll up a carpet and tie it down. The Junk King crew will handle that. They’ll also take the items you’re getting rid of from your home, basement or attic and load them up in the truck. Best of all, Junk King will be working on your schedule.   It’s a no hassle solution to get rid of those bulk items.  Get rid of junk the right way with Junk King.

Columbus Ohio Grill Disposal and Recycling

Welcome to the blustery, chilly and downright freezing Ohio winter. The good news is that spring is right around the corner. The bad news is that it’s going to be a lot colder before it gets warm. That doesn’t mean you have to forgo all your warm weather activities. This is especially true with grilling outdoors. Although it might be more of a challenge, nothing could better than a fresh grilled steak or piece of fish. If you want to brave the cold and snow to make an amazing dinner than you’ll want to consider a few helpful winter grilling facts.

Your grilling prep work should be the same as when it’s warm. You’ll want to make your rubs or sauces in large enough batches so you won’t have to run in and out of the house. For great tasting meat and poultry try marinating overnight. You might also want to think about grilling for the week in on single outing. For instance on Sunday you could grill up steaks for fajitas on Monday, chicken for salad on Tuesday etc. That way with a little reheating you can enjoy the scrumptious taste of grilled meat all week long.

Winter grilling should be about keeping it simple. You want to cook recipes that won’t require a lot of fuss or attention when it comes to basting or turning meat. The goal is to get in and get out. You should always have a clear path to your grill. This is especially important if you’ll be grilling after (or during!) a snowstorm. Try not to run back and forth from the grill to your house. Embrace the cold and get the job done without falling! In winter temperatures, that heat is going to be sucked up by the cold so avoid opening and closing the lid every 30 seconds. Let the heat of the grill do its thing. Most importantly, avoid wearing any winter items like scarves which could dangle close to the fire.

If after all this prep work you discover that your grill has seen better days then swap it out. You’ll probably find amazing deals on a new grill at this time of the year. Instead of holding onto the old grill, give Junk King Columbus a call and have them take it away for you. You can’t toss that old grill out on the curb and you don’t want it taking up precious space in your backyard.  In addition, many older grills can be exteremely heavy, rusty, and sharp – you don’t want to risk hurting yourself or damaging your property by trying to haul it off on your own.

One call to Junk King Columbus will have that old grill and all of your other bulky junk items taken away for good.  Replacing your patio furniture?  Remodeling the whole deck?   Junk King will work in any weather to haul off all of your debris and clutter!

Columbus Tree Branch & Yard Debris Disposal

It’s not easy seeing trees cut down especially when they are part of a bike and jogging trail. Recent visitors to the Blackhand Trail experienced this when they stumbled upon a stretch of the trail missing around hundred trees. This was done along the property line between a private landowner and the city of Columbus to make way for a oil pipe extension. There were no surprises between the city and the owner but the same can’t be said to those folks who use those pathways and are now missing the scenic view.

Often trees are look at as “friends” that provide shade and comfort. But a tree on your property that has weakened or fallen branches can turn into an “adversary” if those branches end up on a power line or crashing into a structure. Residents have become all too familiar with waking up after a storm to find all sorts of debris in their yards. When this happens there isn’t an easy solution to the clean up unless you hire a company like Junk King Columbus.

Junk King is a Columbus based business that is part of a national franchise of professional junk haulers. While they make their “bread and butter” hauling off things like worn out furniture and old kitchen appliances, they are also quick and adept at clearing out yard waste like tree branches. Whether those branches broke off on their or you had a hand cutting them down that is not something you want kept on your lawn. A Junk King Columbus crew can easily toss those branches on the back of their truck. They will then get that wood to a proper disposal center where it could be ground up for mulch to spread around the city.

That same disposal routine can happen with the rest of your household junk. Now is the time to finally get rid of all the stuff you’ve been hanging onto for no other reason that it’s too hard to throw away. If all that has been standing in the way of getting rid of that junk is the truck space and requisite hauling muscle than have no fear; Junk King is here!

Usually it will take a Junk King crew less than an hour to load up everything you want take away. Compare that with all the time it would take you to rent a truck, load it up and then drive it to the right local Columbus dump site or recycling center. If you did that it could be an all day affair. Don’t you have a better way to spend your Saturday off? One call to Junk King Columbus is all it will take to get your yard and home junk free.

Columbus Computer Recycling and Disposal

There are certain trash items that have no business being thrown out in the trash. That might sound like an odd statement but the truth is that electronic waste or e-waste is considered hazardous when it’s not properly disposed of. To handle this type of trash those items need to be disassembled and the basic components sorted for disposal. If left unintended in a local Columbus landfill, the chemical compounds which are part of the e-waste can eventually seep into the surrounding environment and that’s not going to be good for anyone in our neighborhoods.

On the long list of “what is e-waste” are such items as computers, servers, monitors, keyboards, mice, speakers, printers, fax machines, copiers, scanners, stereo equipment, cell phones, camcorders, DVD/CD/Blu Ray players and any type of phone equipment. So ask yourself what kind of e-waste you have tucked away in a closet or under your bed? You’re probably holding onto that stuff because there was no way of getting rid of it. Now there is a way, and that would be with hiring Junk King Columbus.

Junk King takes care of all kinds of junk removal projects around the Columbus Ohio area, and that make it their mission to insure whatever they collect is disposed of in a manner that is good for our local community. When it comes to e-waste there are several certified centers around the Columbus area which accept this type of junk. You don’t have to bother with finding out which center is closest to you or will accept what you’re throwing out. Junk King handles all of that as part of their complete junk removal service.

On the same trip that Junk King is getting rid of your e-waste they can also take away any oversize item you’ve been itching to toss out. Things like old sofas, stoves or washing machines can also be destined for recycling centers. In fact, the majority of what Junk King collects will never make it to a landfill. Instead it will be repurposed and reused.

A Junk King crew can also handle the removal of any type of yard waste such as debris left over from the last storm or patio furniture that was ruined from the lasts snow? Nothing will be out of bounds for Junk King. When it comes to pricing, all you’ll be paying is based on the amount of space your junk takes up on the back of their truck.

There are no hidden charges with a Junk King Columbus junk removal job. Whether you’re getting rid of one old computer or an entire room of furniture Junk King is the call you should make (1-800-995-5865).

Columbus Cleaning Help for Asthma and Allergy Sufferers

Lots of Columbus residents suffer from allergies and asthma. In Ohio and the rest of the U.S. rates of people affected have been rising for the last few decades. If this sounds like you, be aware of the exacerbating effects caused by dust mites.

Dust mites are everywhere and are one of the most common triggers of asthma. In addition, they can cause skin irritation and inflame allergic responses.

Dust mites live in all of our homes, consuming the calls our body sheds (especially skin cells). The feces of the dust mite can be an allergen, causing breathing and skin problems. There can be tens of thousands of dust mites on a visible particle of ‘dust,’ and they produce every hour or so. That’s a lot of dust mite poop!

Here are a few things you can do—or we can do for you—to help you win the battle against allergies, asthma and other breathing-related problems like COPD:

1. Get rid of the junk and debris. Extra clutter attracts dust, traps moisture, and is a veritable playground for dust mites. Junk King Columbus will gladly help you remove and dispose of unwanted junk.

2. Deeply clean furniture and other fabrics such as drapes.

3. Vacuum rugs and carpets regularly.

4. Keep the air dry with air-conditioning or a dehumidifier. Dust mites like humidity.

5. Use a HEPA filter to 3 microns. If your house doesn’t have an air filter, then your lungs are the air filter.

6. Other methods of cleaning the air such as ionizers and ozone generators work great but should be used places where the air is treated well before it reaches the air you are breathing. These technologies work by binding to matter in the air but breathing ozone (it is neutralized once bound to the other particles) can actually make things worse.

These recommendations may also help pollen allergy relief. It may not be much of an issue now but ‘April showers bring May flowers,’ and with them comes hay fever in the Buckeye state. Stay healthy and feel free to call us for help with this and all your spring cleaning in the Columbus area.

Getting the house in order for the holidays

Clutter happens.

It starts small: a cardboard box or a pile of newspapers that you plan to recycle; an obsolete computer or an old television set.

guest room that's overflowing with clothes and junk
Then the holidays roll around with all the presents and their packaging. I don’t know about you, but Ohio winters always sap my energy when it comes to housework. If you fall behind and the piles begin to form, it’s easy to feel like you’re up against an insurmountable task.

Whatever the problem, when it comes to clutter, Junk King Columbus is convenient, affordable and eco-friendly, and we serve all of Franklin County and then some. Whether stacks of out-of-date magazines, antiquated VHS tapes or damaged DVDs, we will help you cut through the clutter and get your life back without spending days sorting through the mess.

  • Need to clean out the closet, basement, attic or garage so you can hide gifts for family and friends? We can help.
  • Don’t want to leave the packaging from presents in your trash for anyone who drives by to see? We’ve got you covered.

The holidays are a time of family and friends. It might be nice to clean out the guest bedroom so someone can sleep in there. Even knowing that, it can be hard to find the time to get around to cleaning out all those little storage spaces that fill up so quickly it seems like odds and ends must be breeding.  Junk King is a  local business, located in Dublin—that can get it all sorted and carted off at one time.

Later, after the season of giving, when all the wrapping paper and ribbons have settled, you can call us up for help with that too. Giant cardboard boxes, Styrofoam packaging, the Christmas tree, the decorations from the New Year’s bash, even the old TV (if you were very good this year!) are all things we’ll gladly collect and haul away while you just relax and enjoy being treated like a king.
