There is a long list of preventable deaths and illness that we should always be paying attention to. One of those preventable illnesses is heat exposure. During the summer extreme exposure to heat can get a lot of folks in trouble. According to the Centers of Disease Control, between 1979 and 2003 over 8,000 citizens died from excessive heat exposure. That’s more deaths then from hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined. In 2001 alone there were 300 deaths that were attributed to excessive heat exposure.
Most of these deaths could have been avoided with just some simple precautions. You might not think you’re at risk but someone you know could be that’s why you need to be aware of your surroundings and what your body is trying to tell you when the temperature rises. You should also be sharing this information with those who are most vulnerable which would be the very young or the very old.
To protect yourself you should be drinking plenty of fluids especially water. Don’t wait until you realize you’re thirsty. By then you’re already dehydrated. Keeping a pitcher or jug of water handy is the best option to avoid the thirst. If you’re continuing with your exercise regime then you should increase your water intake when the thermometer rises. What you should avoid are drinks with alcohol or sugar because these actually cause your body to lose more fluid. Also note that extremely cold drinks could result in stomach cramps if gulped down in hot weather.
Your best bet is to get somewhere that has the AC blasting. Places like malls, libraries and movie theatres are great escapes when the sun gets high in the sky and the heat blazes. Taking refuge in those places could also be a great relief to your electric bills. Why crank your AC when you can go somewhere that cranks it for you?
When you get back home you’ll want to make sure you’ve got a good air circulation going. The best air conditioner in the world won’t amount to much if that cool air has to fight its way around your home or apartment. It might seem like all you have to do is pop the AC in a window and turn it on but direction and flow are key issues to get the most out of your AC. To insure you’ve got good air flow you should strip away the clutter out of your home. That’s where Junk King Capital District can lend a hand.

Do you have an Adirondack on your patio? For many residents of upstate New York, the Adirondack is a must have item and for good reason: this is the region where the chair was invented. Back in 1903, furniture designer Thomas Lee was on vacation in Westport when he realized he didn’t have anything comfortable to sit on in his backyard. A few sketches, some sawing and hammering and voila, the Adirondack chair was born. His original version of the chair was made from eleven pieces of wood that were cut from a single board. These slats were the straight back and along with the wide armrests they became the hallmark of the Adirondack design.

Recently Albany residents met on the site of the Pierce Street Park with the Parks and Recreation Commission to discuss plans for improvements of this 4.5 acre parcel. This was a unique type of municipal planning meeting in that it was held outdoors. About 40 local residents showed up for the meeting and offered a wide range of ideas for how this park could put to better use. Among the favorite proposals are a picnic facility, a playground for children, a community garden, horseshoe rings, bocce ball courts and a fenced in dog park. It was that idea for the dog park that seemed to generate the most interest among those in attendance.
Although the calendar might not officially agree, it certainly does feel like summer! As the temperature begins to rise, folks are doing whatever they can to beat the heat. The old school method is to get someone with a big wrench to open up the fire plugs on the street. Beyond that a dip in a pool or spending the day at the local air conditioned Cineplex will do the trick. The last thing anyone is in the mood for when it gets hot is hard work but that doesn’t mean the work can stop.
Hoarding is a very serious psychological disorder that can tear a family apart. A person who suffers from this type of obsessive compulsive behavior can not only put themselves at risk but also all of their neighbors. Then there are the instances where a hoarder takes in animals to satisfy their hoarding tendencies and puts those helpless creatures at risk. At the Halfmoon Town Court an entire family was recently arraigned on charges of animal cruelty for hoarding cats. In one of the cases 134 cats were found living in a trailer in deplorable conditions. Obviously this is a situation when someone’s hoarding tendencies has gotten out of control. Once the law has had their say with these folks they will still need to go through intensive therapy to break the hold that hoarding has on them.
